ARTS APPRECIATION (GE 6)

Learning Activity No. 1: Functions and Philosophy of Art

A. Answer these questions briefly and with honesty.

1. What are the functions of art? Give at least 3.

 Personal Functions of Art
 Social Functions of Art
 Physical Functions of Art
2. Give an example of philosophical perspective on art.
 Art as a Communication of Emotions
3. Based on your answer in item 2, explain on your own words the meaning of that
philosophical perspective.
 Art as a Communication of Emotions because it allows the artist to communicate
with those who value his or her work and because using art allows the artist to
express his or her emotions.
4. What art form/artwork has changed something in your life? Why account for the
experience?
 Painting is the form of art that has changed my life, especially during the
quarantine. Painting is a caught-up-in-the-moment experience for me since I am
able to master a new talent, and it definitely turned into a hobby of mine when the
Enhanced Community Quarantine was implemented here in Tagbilaran City. I was
able to express myself through painting. My viewpoint on life has changed as a
result of painting, and I now appreciate the simplicity of things. I now prefer to paint
inside rather than outside.

B. For each picture shown, give your own interpretation as to the possible motive why
the artist likes to do his work- that is whether his/her motive is personal, social or
physical. Include your justification or reason for giving your judgment.
For example,
Figure 1. Digital Arts

Possible motive of the artist: Personal

Justification: The artist is motivated by the potential income she can derive from her
work.
Figure 2: Spoliarium

Possible motive of the artist: To interpret the lives of the Filipino during Spanish
Colonization.
Justification: The artist is motivated by the prejudices that lie in society (portrayed by the
gladiators, as the slaves while the Roman soldiers are the oppressors) and how
superiority dominates and divides humanity. Injustices are done to those without power
that try to fight for their liberties, but instead, are tossed into the dark as others simply
spectate without much concern towards the repressed. These apathetic spectators are
symbolized by the cheering crowd on the left that wait for what is to happen next to the
gladiators.

Figure 3: A photograph of Ukraine-Russia war crises

Possible motive of the artist: Reality

Justification: The artist is motivated by the happenings in the Ukraine-Russia and
capture the reality there.

Figure 4: Rattan Chair

Possible motive of the artist: Personal and the desire to be recognize.
Justification: The artist is motivated by making a furniture out of a natural resources and
to make a good business too.

Figure 5: Olivia Rodrigo’s Driver’s License (Song)

Possible motive of the artist: Personal

Justification: The artist is motivated by the heartbreak she had been through.
