Mathematics in the

Modern World
1
Nature of
Mathematics
2
Learning Outcomes:
• Identify patterns in nature and regularities in the world.
• Articulate the importance of mathematics in one’s life.
• Argue about the nature of mathematics, what it is, how
it is expressed, represented and used;
• Discuss the role of mathematics in some discipline
• Express appreciation for mathematics as human
endeavor.

3
What is mathematics?

• Mathematics is the science that

deals with the logic of shape,
quantity and arrangement.

4
Where is mathematics?
• Mathematics exists everywhere and it is
applied in the most useful phenomenon.
• It is an integral part of daily life.
• Like any other language, it has its own
symbols, syntax and rules.

5
Patterns in Nature and the Regularities in
the World

Patterns - are regular, repeated, or

recurring forms or design.
Regularity - is the fact that the same thing
always happens in the same circumstances.
(Collins, 2018)
6
Symmetry - agreement in dimensions, due proportion
and arrangement.
- indicates that you can draw an imaginary line across an
object and the resulting parts are mirror images of each
other.

7
Spiral - is a curve which emanates from a point,
moving further away as it revolves around the
point.

8
Meander - Series of regular sinuous curves, bends,
loops, or windings in the channel of a river.

9
Wave - is a disturbance that transfers energy
through matter or space, with little or no
associated mass transport

10
Importance of Mathematics in Life

• Math is a subject that makes

students either jump for joy or rip
their hair out. (katie kim 2015)

11
Importance of Mathematics in Life
• Calculating bills
• Computing test scores
• Administering drugs
• Handling money
• Baking and cooking

12
Role of mathematics in some
disciplines
• Mathematics is not only number
work or computation, but it is more
about generalization, seeing
relationships and developing logical
thinking and reasoning.(angel
rathnabai 2014)
13
Arithmetic Sequence

14
ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
• An Arithmetic Sequence is defined as a sequence
in which there is a common difference between
consecutive terms

15
Which of the following sequences are arithmetic?
Identify the common difference.

3,  1, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, . . . d 2

84, 80, 74, 66, 56, 44, . . .

50,  44,  38,  32,  26, . . . d 6

16
Find the next three terms in the sequence.
−3, −1,1,3,5,7,9, _ , _ , _...
Find the common difference (the difference between
consecutive terms)
d 2
We will just add 2 for the succeeding terms

−3, −1,1,3,5,7,9, 11 , 13 , 15...

17
In finding the nth term of an arithmetic sequence, the given
formula can be used.

an  a1   n  1 d
an  The nth term n  The term number
a1  The 1st term d  The common difference

18
Example 1
Given: 79, 75, 71, 67, 63, . . .
Find: a32
IDENTIFY SOLVE
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 + 𝑛 − 1 𝑑
a1  79 𝑎32 = 79 + 32 − 1 −4
d  4 𝑎32 = 79 + 31 −4
𝑎32 = 79 − 124
n  32 𝑎32 = −45

19
Example 2
Given: 79, 75, 71, 67, 63, . . .
Find: 𝑎14

IDENTIFY SOLVE
𝑎14 = 𝑎1 + 𝑛 − 1 𝑑
𝑎1 = 79 𝑎14 = 79 + 14 − 1 −4
𝑑 = −4 𝑎14 = 79 + 13 −4
𝑛 = 14 𝑎14 = 79 − 52
𝑎14 = 27

20
Example 3
Given: 9, 16, 23, 30, 37. . .
Find: 𝑎50

IDENTIFY SOLVE
𝑎50 = 𝑎1 + 𝑛 − 1 𝑑
𝑎1 = 9 𝑎50 = 9 + 50 − 1 7
𝑑=7 𝑎50 = 9 + 49 7
𝑛 = 50 𝑎50 = 9 + 343
𝑎50 = 352
