1. In December as per report Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has increased the minimum utilisation amount earmarked for buybacks through
stock exchange to ________ per cent from 50 per cent.
A. 100 %
B. 75 %

 Market regulator said buybacks through stock exchanges would be phased out
gradually.
 The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) also increased the minimum
utilisation amount earmarked for buybacks through stock exchange to 75 per cent
from 50 per cent.
 The SEBI also said in a statement that it would permit an upward revision of buyback
price through tenders until one working day prior to the record date.
 The timeline for completion of buybacks through tender offers has been reduced by
18 days.
 SEBI has said that these buybacks would be slowly phased out from the secondary
market exchange platforms and conducted on a separate window. This is to ensure
transparency in the tender process.
 SEBI said it would also cut the time for share buyback to 66 days from the present 90-
day period.
 In the tender route, shares will be brought back by companies at premium to the
market price and since the acceptance ratio too would be high it would benefit
retail investors.
 In another major announcement SEBI said that market infrastructure institutions
(MII), like stock exchanges, should create separate business development and risk
management verticals. The move comes nearly seven years after the NSE first got
embroiled in controversy due to lapse of corporate governance at the exchange and
the co-location trading scandal that led to the arrest of former exchange MD Chitra
Ramkrishna.
 Share buyback is when a listed company buys its own shares from existing shareholders.
 It is also called share repurchase.
 Process reduces number of outstanding shares in open market which leads to better valuation and Earnings Per Share (EPS).
 Keki Mistry committee was set up by SEBI to review the buyback regulations.
 Committee recommended that under stock exchange route, there are possibility of one shareholder’s entire trade matching with purchase order placed by
company.
 This may deprive other shareholders of availing benefit of buyback.
 It is contrary to principle of equitable treatment which forms basis of all corporate actions.
 Following its recommendations, SEBI will phase out buyback through stock exchange route effect from 2025.
 It was constituted as a non-statutory body in 1988 through a resolution of Government of India.
 It was established as a statutory body in year 1992. It’s a 9 members body consisting of- Chairman is nominated by Union Government of India, Two
officers of Union Finance Ministry, One member of Reserve Bank of India, Remaining nominated by Union Government of India where 3 of them are
whole-time members.

 Gift City regulator International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA)


has come up with a regulatory framework for distribution of capital market
products and services from international financial services centres (IFSCs).
 With this move, distributors of capital market products can register with the
IFSCA, and undertake global distribution from these IFSCs and offer their
services to clients in various jurisdictions. Currently, there is only one IFSC in
India — GIFT City in Gujarat.
 In Gift City, distributors are permitted to enter into arrangements with other
distributors (called associated distributors) from India, IFSC and foreign
jurisdictions to widen the scope of their operations, get access to a larger pool
of issuers and service providers, and cater to a broader clientele.
 In order to protect the interest of clients, the framework provides for various
eligibility requirements, a detailed code of conduct including an
advertisement code, other obligations, various permissible activities,
responsibilities of issuers and service providers in IFSC, etc.
 The capital market services that can be provided out of the IFSCs include
portfolio management services and investment advisory services.
 While distributors may offer their services to “sophisticated investors” and
distribute a wide bouquet of products and services, the distribution to other
investors may be undertaken with higher level of diligence and from a
restricted set of products and services.
 Distributors such as banking units, finance companies, broker-dealers and those with a net worth more than $1,50,000 are permitted to invest in select
countries where omnibus structure is allowed, subject to adequate measures such as prior consent of clients, maintenance of records, compliance with KYC
and AML/CFT norms, etc.
 A comprehensive code of conduct has also been prescribed to ensure distributors maintain high standards of integrity, disclosure, diligence, promptitude
and fairness in their dealings with clients.
 The code of conduct would have to be complied by all registered distributors, associated distributors and other distributors that are empanelled by IFSC-
based entities for distribution of their products/services.
 It is established in 2020 under Financial Services Centres Authority Act, 2019.
 It headquarters is at Gujarat International Finance Tech (GIFT) City, Gandhinagar in Gujarat.

Credit customers) in the age group of 18-55 years, with an average
income of ₹ 30,000 per month.

developments in the upcoming year.
 According to the finance ministry’s monthly economic review for
November, a diverging rate hike cycle across economies may act as a

Exception has been Japan which has upped its growth projection.
 As per the report, India needs to focus on medium-term challenges such

 Q2 of 2022-23 also marked a post-recovery growth for the Indian
economy.
 The report notes that CPI-based retail inflation came within upper limit

 The report says that core inflation, however, remained at high level of
6% in November.
 The report highlighted that the real investment rate during Q2 of 2022-
23 remained at high level of 34.6%.

 Passenger ferry service is going to start


between India and Sri Lanka from January.
The ferry service will connect the

Government of India has given consent for
the ferry service.
 The passenger ferry service is likely to give a boost to the tourism sector as well as strengthen the cultural ties between the two countries.
 He said that passenger transport services would also be started from South India to Trincomalee and Colombo in Sri Lanka.
 Mr. D'Silva said that this step of starting the ferry service has been taken on the demand of the people of both countries.
 Under the new service, 300 to 400 passengers will be carried in each trip.
 The journey time of the ferry will be around three and a half hours.
 Ferry owners suggest that the fare for the ferry may be Rs 5,000 per passenger and a passenger will be able to carry luggage up to 100 kg.

As per RBI, the recording of CCTV camera shall be preserved for a period of not less

 RBI’s amended bank locker rules will take effect from 1st January. RBI has asked banks in India to renew their locker agreements with existing locker
customers by 1st January.
 All the existing locker customers must furnish proof of eligibility for a renewed locker arrangement.
 RBI has advised the banks to install CCTV camera at entry and exit points of the strong room and the common areas of operation.
 As per RBI, the recording of CCTV camera shall be preserved for a period of not less than 180 days.
 RBI has also asked the banks to make sure that any “unfair terms or conditions” are not covered in their locker agreements.
 As per the guidelines, If any customer has complained that his/her locker is opened without his/her knowledge then the bank shall preserve the CCTV
recording till the police investigation is completed and the dispute is settled.
 As per the guidelines, this provision of preserving CCTV recording also applies if any theft or security breach is noticed.
 If the valuables stored in the vaults are ransacked or lost due to fire or building collapse, depositors can now get up to 100 times the bank charges.
 However, the bank is not responsible for any loss or damage to the locker's contents resulting from natural disasters or other "Acts of God."
