The Covid-19 pandemic has caught everyone off guard, causing them to live in a

situation termed as the new normal. Education is one of the affected sectors in the

Philippines. Department of Education uses different learning modalities in order that

education should continue despite of the pandemic. Science is one of the subjects

greatly affected by this new normal in education. Science as a subject has many

laboratory classes, however in this situation where face-to-face classes are not allowed,

laboratory classes are also halted.

Science educators have believed that the laboratory is an important means of

instruction in science since late in the 19th century (Blosser, 1990). In addition, Blosser

said that laboratory instruction was considered important because it provided training in

observation, supplied detailed information, and aroused pupils' interest. Science attracts

students because it involves the “real-world” application of theories learnt in the

classroom. Science education entails students participating in scientific research.

Scientific study entails the way people think, their attitudes, and the procedures they

take to get science's products and knowledge. Students should be able to connect

abilities, information, and attitudes in order to improve their conceptual understanding.

The science method is one of the most fundamental basic abilities in scientific

investigation (Gilbert Santos Arrieta et al, 2020).

Teaching Science was already a hard undertaking for most of us, Science

teachers, before Covid-19 emerged on the scene. This is especially true during a

pandemic, when classes are held remotely, either through online or modular distance

learning methods. Without the advice and aid of a more experienced Science teacher,

most science experiments and activities are unthinkable to execute at home.

The construction of virtual learning environments has become an essential topic

of science as virtual educational technology has grown in popularity both globally and

locally. With the Philippine education system today, lack of physical laboratories is the

problem in teaching science concept to the learners. Students are at large risk in these

times, deprived with the full potential of their capabilities and knowledge. Thus,

introducing the virtual science laboratory to the learners is worthy of further examination.
