Group cohesiveness is being committed to a group or to group members where all the members of the

group find similarities in their nature and interest. If there is a good attachment between members and
similarity of goals then it forms an intact organization. You can define this as team cohesiveness.

It is also a circle of people who share the same interests and abilities. And such a group and their group
members are reliable for each other.

We have here the conclusion summarized about the relationship between group cohesiveness,
performance norms, and productivity.

I wanna give emphasis that Cohesiveness affects group productivity. Studies consistently show that the
relationship between cohesiveness and productivity depends on the group’s performance-related
norms.

If norms for quality, output, and cooperation with outsiders, for instance, are high, a cohesive group will
be more productive than will a less cohesive group. We can see this in the given illustration.

But if cohesiveness is high and performance norms are low, productivity will also be low. If cohesiveness
is low and performance norms are high, productivity increases, but less than in the high-cohesiveness/
high-norms situation. When cohesiveness and performance-related norms are both low, productivity
tends to fall into the low-to-moderate range.

ADVANTAGES OF GROUP COHESIVENESS

The benefits of group cohesiveness pierce the cloud surrounding it by its attitude. Here are the
advantages and disadvantages of group cohesiveness.

1. Better cooperation
- If the goals and likes of the group members are the same, then group cohesiveness helps the
group achieve better results and be more productive. Leaders and team members will be
able to work better together.

But the disadvantage of this is;

1. Lack of creativity
- As most of the members of the team share a single and simple interest and eventually this
type of similar interest can deliver the same sort of results each time.
- Therefore, because of group cohesive behavior, the company can lack behind with its
creative elements. Moreover, all the elements in the group cohesiveness provide a lower
level of creativity among their group or a team.

Second is;

2. Time-saving
- A work or a task allotted to a group of persons instead of work allotted to an individual can
approach a positive side of the work.
- For instance, when someone is working alone, it might take them longer to solve the
problems but when a group of people is working together, the solution can be better and
faster than when only one person is working.

while its disadvantage is that the;

2. Lack of innovation
- It is quite similar to the topic that one can understand better. Most of the time people
involved in a group can come up with a low level of innovation and that eventually lacks
creativity in their field of work.
- Therefore, it is necessary to understand all the things within this group cohesiveness.
Moreover, this creates a lack of innovation among their members.

Number 3 is;

3. Improves communication
- It gets easier for the whole team to communicate when they work together as a group under
the team leader. When they interact with each other, their lives change for the better and
they become more confident.

And its disadvantage is;

3. Domination
- The domination can experience because of the team leaders of each group. Most of these
types of group leader domination can never benefit the company, moreover, it can damage
the unity of the group.
- Therefore, all the team leaders need to understand that if they need and want their team
members to work according to their direction, then they need to treat as equals in the
group.

Now lets move on to GROUP PROPERTY 6: DIVERSITY

This is the final property of the groups we consider is Diversity in the group’s membership, the degree to
which members of the group are similar to, or different from, one another.

Diversity appears to increase group conflict, especially in the early stages of a group’s tenure, which
often lowers group morale and raises dropout rates.

Surface-level diversity—in observable characteristics such as national origin, race, and gender—alerts
people to possible deep-level diversity in underlying attitudes, values, and opinions.

Again, since diversity appears to increase group conflict. On a wilderness survival exercise, the groups
performed equally well, but the diverse groups were less satisfied with their groups, were less cohesive,
and had more conflict.

Teams in which members’ values or opinions differ tend to experience more conflict, but leader who can
get the group to focus on the task at hand and encourage group learning are able to reduce theses
conflicts and enhance discussion of group issues.

The impact of diversity on groups is mixed. It is difficult to be in a diverse group in the short term.
However, if members can weather their differences, over time diversity may help them be more open-
minded and creative and to do better. But even positive effects are unlikely to be especially strong.

As one review stated, “The business case (in terms of demonstrable financial results) for diversity
remains hard to support based on the extant research.”
