A CALL FOR ACTION ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN (VAW)
To whom it may concern,
I am writing this letter to call for action regarding a prevalent gender-based issue
worldwide: violence against women caused by an intimate partner. Violence against
women is a type of gender-based violence resulting in women suffering a state of trauma
physically, mentally, and sexually. In an analysis study done by the WHO on behalf of the
UN Interagency working group on VAW concerning VAW prevalence worldwide, it was
discovered that across 161 countries, 30% of women had been a subject of different forms
of violence caused by a partner from 2000-2018. It also suggested that 25% of women in
relationships ranging from 15-49 years of age have undergone physical and/or sexual
abuse from an intimate partner at least once in their lives. It was also found out that 38%
of female murders were female caused by intimate partners. These detestable acts
committed by intimate partners could be attributed to different risk factors rooted in a
gender-based context, such as the sexual entitlement and manipulative behaviors of men
towards women, and the outdated conventions embedded in the community deeming
men as superior to women.
In light of these disheartening statistics, I am urging people vested with the power to do
something to prevent these kinds of violence within our community. As such, I suggest
that they implement programs and seminars that would help men manage their emotions
and keep their egos in check so that they would not commit such heinous acts to women.
Furthermore, I also urge you, the reader, to raise awareness of these kinds of violence
so that we would be able to decrease the number of cases involving VAW. May it be
raising awareness through various social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter by
sharing and posting informational videos and blogs, or just being vocal about these issues
within your respective communities. These are some of the strategies that I feel would be
pragmatic enough to prevent VAW from occurring within our community. I believe that it
is essential to think of different, practical ways in our battle against VAW.
With that being said, I hope that we take immediate measures so that we can prevent
dangerous, toxic men from harming women in various ways. These strategies should
focus on educating men and letting them realize that it is wrong to do gruesome deeds to
their partners. I am also hoping for us to think of other practical and efficient ways to
prevent VAW. These solutions should be effective despite the aforementioned risk factors
that seem difficult to change. In line with this, I am prompting local authorities to
thoroughly discuss policies for the benefit of victims of gender-based violence. I believe
that through our collective efforts as a community, we would be able to free women from
the physical, sexual, and mental constraints caused by their partners. I am sincerely
hoping that the day will come where gender-based violence is not prevalent anymore.
Sincerely,
Karl B. Castro, Student. Mapua University
