Learning Activity 20: Piagetian Conservation Tasks On Centration

on Pre-Operational Stage of Cognitive Development

Name of Child: Luna Castro Age:5 (Preschoolage)

Brief Family Background: Write 3 -5 sentences in paragraph
Luna is the youngest child of Angel and Anthony Castro. Her parent is a call center agent and a nurse .They are
currently living in Santiago City Isabela. She has a two older brother named King and Kevin. They are financially
stable and living a comfortable life with their respective family.

QUESTON: Can a preschool age child conserve number, volume, length and mass?

A1. Piagetian Conservation Task on Number

1.1. Materials Used: Candy
1.2. Procedures: (Step by step dialogue between the teacher and child based on the
experiment you’ve watched on YouTube Piagetian Tasks)
Use the mother tongue of the child in the conduct of the experiment.
Narrate the dialogue based on the actual simple experiment.
Scenario: The teacher put 30 candy's and separated it into two groups or two sets with equal number of
candy's which is 15 candy's each then the teacher ask the child;

Teacher’s Presentation/Questions Child’s Response

If I give this bunch of candy's to you and I Yes ma'am
give this other bunch of candy's to your
classmate,do you think you two have the
same amount of candy's?
If I scatter this candy's and put the other No,ma'am because the scattered candy's
candy on a small container that fits all the consume more space than the candy's in the
candy's inside,do you think you two still has container therefore, the scattered candy's has
the same amount of candy's? greater amount.
Explain your answer.

A2. Piagetian Conservation Task on Volume

2.1. Materials Used: One small bucket and a bigger bucket with water.
2.2. Procedures: (Step by step dialogue between the teacher and child based on the
experiment you’ve watched on YouTube Piagetian Tasks)
Use the mother tongue of the child in the conduct of the experiment.
Narrate the dialogue based on the actual simple experiment.
Scenario: Showing the child a big bucket with half amount of water and a smaller bucket with full amount of
water,both bucket has 500ml of water.Then asking the child;

Teacher’s Presentation/Questions Child’s Response

Do you think the big bucket has greater No,the smaller bucket has more water because
amount of water than the small one? it's overflowing.
If I transfer it in a same size bucket,do you Yes.
think they have the same amount of water
now?

A3. Piagetian Conservation Task on Length

3.1. Materials Used:Yarn
3.2. Procedures: (Step by step dialogue between the teacher and child based on the
experiment you’ve watched on YouTube Piagetian Tasks)
Use the mother tongue of the child in the conduct of the experiment.
Narrate the dialogue based on the actual simple experiment.
Scenario:Two 1 meter yarn are placed in the floor, one is straight and the other one is circular.

Teacher’s Presentation/Questions Child’s Response

If I have this 1 meter yarn and place it straight No.
on the floor do you think there is a change in
it's length?
Now,if I placed it on the floor in the shape of No,it's shorter now.
a circle,do you think it still have the same
length?
A.4. Piagetian Conservation Task on Mass
4.1. Materials Used: 20 small marbles that has the same mass as the 2 large marbles
4.2. Procedures: (Step by step dialogue between the teacher and child based on the
experiment you’ve watched on YouTube Piagetian Tasks)
Use the mother tongue of the child in the conduct of the experiment.
Narrate the dialogue based on the actual simple experiment.
Scenario: Showing the child 2 sets of marbles that has different size and quantity but is equivalent in mass.

Teacher’s Presentation/Questions Child’s Response

I have 20 small marbles and 2 big The smaller marbles are heavier because it
marbles, both set of marbles are 50 has greater amount of marbles.
grams, what set of marbles do you think is
heavier?
If I have 20 big marbles and 20 small Yes.
marbles,do you think they have the same
mass now?

CONCLUSION: Answer the question indicated above, and make a brief reaction/reflection about the
experiment conducted.
A preschool child can't conserve number, volume, length and mass.Simple alteration brings them confusion
resulting in the inability to tell whether there are changes in matter or there are no changes in matter that has
occured. They based their answer on what they see and based on what they believe are true, the answers are
focused on their opinion and science was set aside due to young age and due to their ability to answer certain
questions that includes simple logic.

Name of Child: Claire Ann Navarro Age:9(Elementary age)

Brief Family Background: Write 3 -5 sentences in paragraph
Claire is the second child of Jane and Paul Navarro. Her parent is a housewife and a driver. They are currently
living in Santiago City and she has 1 older brother and 1 younger sister. They are living a happy life despite lack
of financial stability.Claire is now in 4th grade and she has a good academic performance.

mass now?

CONCLUSION: Answer the question indicated above, and make a brief reaction/reflection about the
experiment conducted.
Yes,an elementary child can conserve length, number, volume and mass.Their brain functioning is enough for
analyzing and understanding logic. They can differentiate certain changes or alteration happening in a
matter. They can tell whether there are changes that has happened or if there are no changes at all.
