A review of “Derek Chauvin: The man accused of

killing George Floyd”

Source: BBC News
Date of publication: 11th of march 2021

Article summary

This article is about the man that is accused of

killing George Floyd and this article shows the
charges he is facing. Mr Chauvin kneeled on Mr
Floyd's back and neck for seven minutes and 46
seconds, according to prosecutors. This situation
sparked outrage among black people. From the
article we know, that Derek Chauvin is charged
with second-degree murder and manslaughter.
Prosecutors are also seeking to add a charge of
third-degree murder. On 7 October 2020, a judge
agreed to free Mr Chauvin on a $1m bail, pending
trial. He had been held since May at a maximum-
security prison in Oak Park Heights, Minnesota. In
February, US media reported that former US
Attorney General Bill Barr quashed a potential
plea deal that would have seen Mr Chauvin spend
10 years behind bars in exchange for pleading
guilty. This is all we know about his charges so far.

Significance
This topic is in my opinion very important
because it shows the consequences of racism.
What Derek Chauvin did on the 25th of May was
absolutely horrible and disgusting. The killing of
Mr. Floyd is not the only situation a black person
was not treated tight. This should raise awareness
among any person in the USA and the world.

Opinion

I found this article very interesting and

informative. I think it’s important to speak about
such topics because racism and discrimination are
very big problems nowadays.

Suggestions and questions

I’d recommend this article to any racist person.
There will always be some racist people, but this
article shows what happens if you behave in an
awful way towards minority’s. After reading this
article I have one question- What’s next? I wonder
what will happen to Mr. Chauvin and I’m curious
to see how people in the US will behave in the
future. Will they learn their lesson, that racism is
awful? Or will they behave the same? Only time
will tell.

Point of view

The information in this text is presented

objectively. The author doesn’t present his
opinion on this situation, he is only presenting
facts. We don’t see any sentences like “this was an
awful thing” or “this trial is very important”. We
are just given the information.
