Ancient Greece Summary

Ch1
Thinking of ancient as beginning with the rinse of city states and the
colonization of the region around the Mediterranean Sea in about 750
BCE are historians. Gradually expanding sea trade with other groups in
the Aegean Sea were the Minoans. Crete was rocked by a massive
earthquake in 1450 BCE. Evidence in Mycenaean religion of many gods
and goddesses associated with classical Greece was found by
archaeologists. CE saw the full flowering of classical Greek civilization in
the thirteen centuries stretching from approximately 750 BCE to 529 CE.
Indicating that the Greeks had broadened their trade networks was the
presence of certain patterns and designs. Temples were built to Athena
by Athens and Sparta. Affected from top to bottom was the Greek
culture as the population increase. Only one of the several crises that
Athens faced during the archaic period was conflict between clans.
Resulting in expansion of trade with the East was Colonization.
Becoming a major religious center during Peisistratus's time in command
was Athens. The most influential polis was Athens at the beginning of
the classical period. Falling to the Persians were the Greeks.
Counterattacks were launched by Athens. Athens didn't succeed in its
fight with Sicily. Joining forces to battle Thebes and its allies at Mantinea
.were Athens and Sparta

Shaping much of our modern world is Ancient Greece's cultural


contributions. Often marking the boundaries of the polis was the sea,
mountains, or an adjacent city state. Remaining in Sparta posing a
problem for the city state were the helots after Sparta achieved victory
in the Messenian War. Presiding over the agoge and called the citizen
assembly to order was the Ephors. Appointed for life were the by shouts
of approval before the ekklesia were members of the gerousia. The polis
of Athens had direct democracy from about 508 to 321 BCE. In the
ekklesia, citizens could elect military judges. Usually heard by panels of
about five hundred people, were trials considering constitutional issues
or charges against corrupt leaders. The fact that the boule was part of
the government most essential trial for coordinating the activities of
Athenian democracy was concluded by historians. Lending support to
democratic principles and institutions were the reform of Cleisthenes in
.Athens

Greece seems like it was destined to develop as it did. Located on the
southernmost part of the Balkan Peninsula was Ancient Greece. At the
.northernmost border of Greece was Olympus for the ancients

Clearly defined at each stage of life were social roles. The same
everywhere were Greek houses by the classical Hellenistic Ages.

Tied to its religious beliefs was the development of ancient Greek
civilization. Originating and evolving from earlier deities of other
.civilizations were some of the Greek deities

In 146 BCE, the Roman Republic's destruction of the wealthy polis of
Corinth signaled a fundamental shift in Greek history. Ruling Greece
through Macedonian governors was Rome. The Olympic Games,
buildings designed with balance or with grand columns was all made by
.Greeks
