Upon completion of this training program you will be able to:

•Describe the 12-Volt Auxiliary No-Idle HVAC system.

•Operate the system.
•And know the periodic maintenance for the system.

4
5
The purpose of the 12-Volt Auxiliary No-Idle HVAC system, feature code 16UZL, is to
maintain comfortable sleeper temperatures in hot and cold weather environments,
without the need to run the vehicle’s engine.

The system is powered by batteries and provides 5,000 BTU’s of air conditioning and
17,000 BTU’s of heat.

6
The system is comprised of a No-Idle A/C module incorporated into the
conventional sleeper HVAC system and housing assembly, mounted under the
passenger side of the sleeper bunk.

7
A separate fuel fired coolant heater, mounted under the sleeper, is incorporated
into the coolant path of the conventional heater in the sleeper bunk HVAC system.

An integrated coolant pump circulates the coolant for No-Idle Heating and Engine
Preheating when requested.

8
The No-Idle and conventional HVAC systems utilize a single blower motor, sensors,
and controllers.

9
Finally, the vehicle is equipped with eight Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries, with
four mounted in a second battery box, and a high capacity 320 Amp Alternator.

10
No-Idle HVAC functions are controlled by switches and an electronic temperature
control panel, contained in the sleeper control panel.
The Engine Preheat functions are controlled by a switch mounted in the dash
control panel.

11
The No-Idle HVAC system contains a serviceable sleeper inlet air filter and a
replaceable fuel strainer on the inlet side of the fuel metering pump within the fuel
fired coolant heater.

12
13
WARNING: Explosion Hazard. To prevent personal injury or death and damage to
the vehicle, equipment, or components, both the ENGINE PRE HEAT switch located
on the dash control panel and the NO IDLE HEAT switch located on the sleeper
control panel, must be set to the OFF position before filling any fuel tank or moving
the vehicle into an enclosed area where combustible fumes may be present.

14
WARNING: Exhaust fumes can be fatal. To prevent personal injury or death, the
heater must not be operated in garages or other enclosed areas without properly
venting the heater unit exhaust to the outside.

15
CAUTION: The use of this coolant heater system requires the engine coolant be of a
proper mixture to prevent freezing or slushing. Refer to ISIS for specific coolant
mixture recommendations. Frozen or slushy coolant can cause a blockage leading to
rapid pressure buildup in the system hoses and could cause damage to the vehicle,
equipment, or components.

16
Note: The No-Idle A/C system, No-Idle Heat system, or the Engine Preheat system,
will not operate unless the following conditions are established:
•The vehicle engine must not be running.
•The ignition key is set to OFF or ACCESSORY.
•The parking brake must be applied.
•Or the vehicle batteries must be above the 11.7 volt, low voltage shut-off level.

17
18
When outside ambient temperatures require the No-Idle HVAC system to operate in
the A/C mode, start the No-Idle A/C System, by pressing the NO IDLE COOL switch.
When activated, the switch indicator will illuminate.

19
Note: While the No-Idle HVAC system is designed to maintain a comfortable sleeper
temperature, attempting to cool down a hot sleeper will shorten the available no-
idle run time. When the No-Idle A/C system is going to be used, first cool the
sleeper to a comfortable temperature using the vehicle’s regular A/C system with
the engine running.

20
Press the Fan Control buttons to set the sleeper fan to the desired speed.
Press the right button to increase fan speed.
Press the left button to decrease fan speed and turn the fan off.
As the fan speed is adjusted, the display panel will display a bar graph indicating the
relative speed setting of the fan.

21
Press the Temperature Control buttons to adjust the sleeper temperature set point.
Press the blue, left button, to lower the set point.
Press the red, right button, to raise the set point.

22
NOTE: The Temperature display is a representation of the current temperature set
point, NOT the actual sleeper temperature.

23
As the temperature is adjusted, the display panel will display a bar graph indicating
the temperature set point.
The temperature setting may require re-adjustment after the sleeper reaches a
constant temperature.

24
To Stop the No-Idle A/C system, press the NO IDLE COOL switch again.
When de-activated, the switch indicator will not be illuminated.

25
The following actions will automatically de-activate the No-Idle A/C mode:
•Starting the vehicle engine.
•Releasing the parking brake.
•Pressing the NO IDLE COOL switch.
•Pressing the NO IDLE HEAT switch.
•Pressing the ENGINE PRE HEAT switch.
•The vehicle batteries drop below the 11.7 volt low voltage shutdown level.

26
27
28
NOTE: For extended periods of auxiliary heating (8 to 10 hours), it is recommended
the blower be operated at low speed to avoid premature shutdown by the low
battery voltage sensor.

29
NOTE: Whenever use of the auxiliary heater is anticipated, always ensure the fuel
tanks contain enough fuel to allow heater operation without resulting in
dangerously low fuel levels.

30
When outside ambient temperatures require the No-Idle HVAC system to operate in
the Heat mode, start the No-Idle Heat system by pressing the NO IDLE HEAT switch.
When activated, the switch indicator will illuminate.

31
Note: If the coolant heater is currently operating because the Engine Preheat mode
has been activated, the No-Idle Heat mode becomes active immediately.

32
If the coolant heater is not currently operating, the following Start sequence will
initiate:
•The control unit performs a System Self Check of the flame sensor, temperature
sensor, overheat sensor, glow pin, blower, and coolant pump.
•The coolant pump starts to circulate fluid.
•The combustion blower turns on.
•The glow pin preheats 20-50 seconds.
•The fuel metering pump starts and gradually increases speed.

33
Note: Starting the coolant heater may require multiple attempts (up to 10) if the
heater fuel line has been disconnected, or otherwise lost its prime.

34
Once ignition takes place, and the flame sensor recognizes a consistent rise in
temperature, the control unit shuts off the glow pin.

Ignition time is 1.5 to 3 minutes.

35
After successful ignition, the heater will continue to run, cycling through its
operational stages, until it is switched off.

36
Press the Fan Control buttons to set the sleeper fan to the desired speed, as
previously shown in this program.

37
Press the Temperature Control buttons to adjust the sleeper temperature set point,
as previously shown in this program.

38
To Stop the No Idle Heat system press the NO IDLE HEAT switch again.
When de-activated, the switch indicator will not be illuminated.

39
When the Heat mode is switched off, manually or automatically, the following
controlled Cool Down cycle initiates:
•The fuel metering pump stops delivering fuel and the flame is extinguished.
•The combustion air blower and coolant pump continue to run for 130 seconds to
cool down.
•The heater shuts off.

40
The following actions will automatically de-activate the No-Idle Heat mode:
•Starting the vehicle engine.
•Releasing the parking brake.
•Pressing the NO IDLE COOL switch.
•Pressing the NO IDLE HEAT switch.
•Pressing the ENGINE PRE HEAT switch.
•The vehicle batteries drop below the 11.7 volt, low voltage shutdown level.

41
42
43
When it is desired to preheat the vehicle’s engine, start the Engine Preheat system
by pressing the ENGINE PRE HEAT switch.
When activated, the switch indicator will illuminate.

44
Note: If the coolant heater is currently operating because the No-Idle Heat mode
has been activated, the Engine Preheat mode becomes active immediately.

45
If the coolant heater is not currently operating, the Start Sequence described earlier
in this program will initiate.

46
After successful ignition, the heater will continue to run, cycling through its
operational stages, until it is switched off.

47
When the system is operating in the Engine Preheat mode, the Fan Control buttons,
Temperature Control buttons, and their bar graph displays on the sleeper control
panel will be disabled.

48
To stop the Engine Preheat system, press the ENGINE PRE HEAT switch again.
When de-activated, the switch indicator will not be illuminated.

49
When the Engine Preheat mode is switched off, manually or automatically, the
controlled Cool Down cycle described earlier will initiate.

50
The following actions will automatically de-activate the Engine Preheat mode:
•Starting the vehicle engine.
•Releasing the parking brake.
•Pressing the NO IDLE COOL switch.
•Pressing the NO IDLE HEAT switch.
•Pressing the ENGINE PRE HEAT switch.
• or The vehicle batteries drop below the 11.7 volt, low voltage shut-off level.

53
To maintain the efficiency in which the 12-Volt Auxiliary No-Idle HVAC system
operates, service your No-Idle HVAC system each Spring.

54
At least once or twice a month, operate both the No-Idle Air Conditioner and the
No-Idle Heater, for a minimum of 15 minutes.
This periodic operation keeps all the mechanical parts in good operating condition.

55
Inspect the sleeper inlet filter every Spring, or more often when operating in
unusually dusty conditions. Clean with a soap solution on both sides as needed.

If replacement is required, a new filter is available through the International Parts

System.

56
Inspect the heater inlet and outlet areas for leaves, bugs, etc.

Remove any debris found.

57
The electrical lines and connections to the fuel fired coolant heater should be
inspected for damage or corrosion.

Repair damaged electrical lines and clean any corrosion found.

Also, inspect the fuel lines for damage or any leaks at the fittings.

Replace damaged fuel lines and repair any leaks found.

58
Finally, the heater glow pin and the fuel strainer inside the fuel metering pump
should be inspected and replaced as necessary.

59
In summary, the 12-Volt Auxiliary No-Idle HVAC system, can provide driver comfort
in a wide range of exterior climate conditions and preheats the vehicle’s engine
when needed, without the need to run the vehicle’s engine.
