Friction
Motion is an everyday part of life. Without it, no work could be done. Forces acting
on an object may be balanced or unbalanced. Force gives energy to the object
which can either set it in motion, or change its motion in any way. Motion happens
because of forces acting on an object. Some forces act only if objects touch.
Example:
1. When you use your hands to push a heavy cart across the floor, your hands
and the cart touch.
2. You push your foot on the floor to move a skateboard forward.
3. Pull the door of the refrigerator to open it.
4. Press on the keys of the keyboard of a computer to type words.
5. When pushing the box, the underside surface of the box is in contact with the
surface of the floor.
Title: What is Friction? Perform it.
1. Rub the palms of your hands briskly. Then, put your palm on your cheeks.
How do the palms of your hands feels after rubbing them briskly?

2. Cover the blocks of wood with sandpaper. Rub them briskly for a minute.
Listen to the sound made. Then, touch its surface.

3. Walk barefoot on unpolished tiled. Apply some floor wax on the floor, then
scrub it. Walk barefoot on the floor again. What is the effect of applying wax on
the floor? Can you walk better on shiny floor? Why?

What is it called when two objects rub together? Why?

Friction as Force

When you walk on the floor, friction acts as breaks to your foot. It acts against the
floor and enables you to step forward, backward and stop whenever you want to.
Friction is also the reason why any ball across the ground slows down after some
time.

The force acts in the opposite direction to the way an object wants to move. This
force slows down the movement on certain surfaces. It also stops or resists motion
in some instances.

Example.

The covered bottle will be difficult to open if there is no friction between your hand
and the bottle. At the time, you cannot close the bottle tightly if there is no friction
between the bottle and the screw on the cover.

Direction: Read and analyse the following questions. Write True if the statement is
correct and False if the statement is wrong. Write your answer on the space
provided.

___________ 1. You cannot write if there no friction between the paper and pencil.

___________ 2. Less friction means the opposite force is easier to stop.

___________ 3. If there is no friction, you cannot light a match.

___________ 4. Smooth surfaces create more friction than rougher surfaces.

2
___________ 5. The liquid rain water makes the streets smoother or slippery,
causing less friction.

Reducing or Lessening Friction

Friction is reduced to facilitate work. Balls, wheels or roller bearings are attached on
legs of computer tables or office chairs to allow them to roll smoothly over a surface.
Vehicles have wheels so they can transport you and more efficiently.

Lubricant and motor oil are used in engines of cars to prevent friction. Wax is used
to make your floors shiny and sometimes slippery.

Direction: Fill in the blanks with the correct word or phrase.

1. Oil, lubricants, and rollers are used to __________________ friction.

2. Wear and tear on appliances and machines illustrates ________________
effect of frictional forces.
3. When there is no friction between your shoes and the floor you
______________ when you take a step.

Direction: Write a sentence or two to state your explanations for the following
situations. (2pts)

1. You should refrain from running or playing on wet and smooth surfaces after a
dip in the following swimming pool.
