02 Ocean Exploration Lab Report —Cartesian

Diver
Instructions: Complete the lab report below while you explore the effects of pressure on a
Cartesian diver in the Ocean Exploration Lab – Cartesian Diver experiment. You will submit
your completed lab report. (30 points possible)

Please click here to view a video to assist you with this assignment.

Name and Title (1 point)

Lily Gegerson, Ocean Exploration Lab report.. alternative version, i don't have any
condiment packets on hand in time to turn in.

Objective (2 points)
In your own words, what was the purpose of this lab?

I think that the purpose of this lab was to show us how pressure affects what goes on
underwater.

Hypothesis and variables (5 points)

Write your hypothesis in the If/then format shown in the Procedures and identify the
independent and dependent variables.

Hypothesis: (Example: If the pressure increases, then the diver will sink/float.)

i think that if you increase the pressure in the water that the diver will sink, and
viseversa

Independent variable: water pressure

Dependent variable: diver

Procedures (3 points)
On page 7 of the lesson, after reading the introduction, click on “ Ocean Exploration Lab—
Cartesian Diver.” This will take you to the lab. Complete the information below. Click on
“lab alternative version” to collect the data for the lab.

If you completed the “hands-on” version, please include a picture of you completing the
lab below your data.
Include your steps below (number them), including which type of Cartesian diver you
made.

Data (6 points)
This is a sample data table.

Pressure Observation of Diver Depth the diver moved

(cm)

Neutral (starting position) floating 3cm

Small increase (lightly went to the middle of the 11cm

squeezing bottle) bottle

Large increase (strongly sunk to the bottom 21cm

squeezing bottle)

Conclusion (12 points)

Please write in complete sentences.

1. Was your hypothesis supported by your observations? Explain why.

My hypothesis was supported by my observations because the more pressure added,

the lower the diver sunk. and the less pressure the more it floated to the top.

2. Identify any experimental errors.

i don't think there were any experimental errors

3. You observed the effect of pressure on the buoyancy of the Cartesian diver. What is
a different variable that you could change the next time you repeat this experiment and
that might also affect the buoyancy of the diver? Hint: Click here to review Archimedes'
Principle and Pascal's Law or in the lab report!

The law says that when pressure is applied to liquid it is transmitted equally throughout
the fluid. When the bottle is squeezed the pressure throughout the bottle and the diver
is more. i think another variable that we could change is the amount of water/air there is
in the bottle, i think this could play a big part on what happens inside the bottle

4. How does this experiment relate to what you’ve learned about submersible
technology such as submarines and ROVs? Hint: Review page 3 of the lesson.
this relates to what’s learned about submarines and other things because when the
packet is submerged into the water it shows you how submarines or ROVs
