Activity No. 1

Read the problems and provide the correct answers. Please show your solution. Please also
discuss your results comprehensively. You may also use graphical representations such as
graphs to support your discussions.

1. The table below shows the no. of students in each year group at a school.

Year Group 7 8 9 10 11

No. of Students 190 145 145 40 130

The Professor is carrying out a survey for his Research. He uses a stratified sample of 60
students according to the year group.

Calculate the number of year 11 students that should be in his sample. The margin of error
is 5%.

CONCLUSION:

Year No. of Sample Size using Sample Size of Percentage

Group Students/ 5 % margin of error (60) of Sample
Population Size (60)
Size
7 190 73 18 30%
8 145 55 13 22%
9 145 55 13 22%
10 40 15 4 7%
11 130 50 12 20%
Total 650 248 60 100%

First, compute for the Sample Size using 5 % margin of error using Slovin’s formula.

n= N c
1 + Ne2
n = 650 n
1 + 650 (0.05)2
= 650 n
2.625
= 247.6 ≈ 248

For Year 7 = 190 X 248 = 72.5 ≈ 73

650

For Year 8 = 145 X 248 = 55.3 ≈ 55

650

For Year 9 = 145 X 248 = 55.3 ≈ 55

650

For Year 10 = 40 X 248 = 15.2 ≈ 15

650

For Year 11 = 130 X 248 = 49.6 ≈ 50

650

Second, to get the stratified sample of 60 students according to the year group.

Sample Size = Size of entire sample X layer size

Total Population Size

For Year 7 = 60 X 73 = 17.7 = 18

248

For Year 8 = 60 X 55 = 13.3 = 13

248

For Year 9 = 60 X 55 = 13.3 = 13

248

For Year 10 = 60 X 15 = 3.6 = 4

248

For Year 11 = 60 X 50 = 12
248
Therefore, the number of year 11 students that should be in his sample is 12

2. A small village has a population of 400. The population is classified by age as shown in
the table below.
Age (Years) 0-12 13-24 25-40 41-60 61 and up

No. of People 35 58 125 103 79

Denver plans a stratified sample of 50 for his research with a confidence coefficient of
95%.

Calculate the no. of people that should be sampled from each age group.

CONCLUSION:

100% - 95%(confidence coefficient) = 5% (margin of error)

Second, to get the no. of people that should be sampled from each age group.

Sample Size = Size of entire sample X layer size

Total Population Size

For age 0-12 = 50 X 35 = 4.37 ≈ 4

For age 13-24 = 50 X 58 = 7.25 ≈ 7

400

For age 25-40 = 50 X 125 = 15.63 ≈ 16

3. There are three (3) age groups in a competition. The table below shows the no of
competitors in each age group.

16-18 years old 19-24 years old 25 years old and up

Lisbon wants to do a survey of the competitors. She uses a stratified sample of exactly 50
competitors according to each age group.

Work out the number of competitors in each age group that should be in her stratified
sample of 50. The margin of error is 3%.

4. Tokyo and Rio would want to know the no. of WMSU students who are using Facebook
Messenger in communicating with their friends as compared to those who are using text
messages.

The researchers were provided with the following information:

College Male Female
