As they were leaving the barrio at Paliocan [contemporarily spelled Pallocan] they had to traverse the

river before they could secure someone (a priest) to marry them. Without thinking of the river, the two
(lovers) waded in the water. The river was wide enough to be waded; and they were about one–third
away from the bank they left when the high tide came, and the lovers were never seen again.

The people mourned the loss of the two. Their spirits called for help from below; but no one could hear
them.

Every year, a man or two die and if the children ask their grandfathers and other elders for its [the
annual deaths] reason, they will just answer that, “The lovers’ spirits are calling for them.”

Design Concept

The concept of this design relates to A Legend on the Calumpang River. Once upon a time, there was a
beautiful lady who had strict parents. One day, he met a laborer and fell in love with him. The parents of
the beautiful lady disliked the laborer and refused to give their permission for her to marry him. That's
why they got together as they were leaving Paliocan. They had to cross the river before they could get
married. The two (lovers) waded into the river without thinking about it. The river was wide enough to
waded, and they were about one-third of the way away from the bank when the high tide arrived, and
the lovers were never seen again.

The people mourned the loss of the two. Their spirits called for help from below, but no one could hear
them. When children ask their grandfathers and other elderly people why a man or two die each year,
they will simply respond, "The lovers' spirits are calling for them."
In this concept, the lovers employ a suite of best practice approaches, such as providing solutions to
problems on the site and creating aesthetic places that value people's interaction with the environment
in relation to the natural beauty of biodiversity.

 Laborer
- Since the laborer is characterized as a problem solver, the designer's approach to the urban
design of the site must include strategies for the site's problems such as climate resilience, flood
mitigation, supporting on-site water treatment, and biodiversity.
 Beautiful Lady
- Since the beautiful lady is characterized as valuing beauty, she makes the laborer fall in love with
her. For a designer, aesthetics is crucial. By resolving design issues, where people can live
comfortably with one another with the natural beauty of the environment.
