Diamond Grinding Discs
Diamond grinding discs feature a
durable film backing and are available
in abrasive sizes from coarse to very
fine. They are ideal for abrasive
grinding of silicon and other non-
metallic materials.

The selection of abrasive size (coarse to

very fine) depends mostly on the operating parameters for force, rate and RPM which all have
an impact on the resulting surface finish and removal rate. Coarse is good for removing
greater volume of material than very fine, and produces a rougher finish that requires
additional processing steps if a polished finish is desired.

The FINE diamond discs supplied in this kit are excellent for removing a moderate amount of
silicon, up to 1 mm before they need to be replaced. The resulting finish is excellent for
polishing to follow. They are adhered to the polishing mounts using LocTite™ 460/454
adhesive.

The following is a list of available product:

Polishing Mounts
Both a set of 3 and 5 mm mounts are included in the assortment tool kit supplied with the X-
Prep™. They are engineered and precision ground to perform at high speeds without
deflection or vibration. Substitution of these tools is strongly discouraged for safety purposes.

Grinding and polishing discs may be punched or purchased to size to be mounted to these
mounts using Loc-Tite™ 460 or 454 gel.

Item No. Size/Qty

15-92PS12 12 mm Ø, Pk/5
15-92PS9 9 mm Ø, Pk/5
15-92PS5 5 mm Ø, Pk/5
15-92PS3 3 mm Ø, Pk/5
15-9252 2 mm Ø, Pk/20
15-92P1.5 1.5 mm Ø, Pk/20
15-9251 1 mm Ø, Pk/20

TIP:

Grind the end of the tool tip across a 240 grit or equivalent
abrasive to prepare the surface for mounting. A rough
surface improves adhesive grip/performance. This process
is a non-chemical/solvent method that is effective at
removing left-over adhesive when the disc is removed
from the mount so it can be used once again.

Polishing Pads and Discs

A sample set of polishing pads is provided to

enable you to punch from them a disc of your
chosen diameter using the punches
supplied/offered.

These polishing pads/discs are adhered to the

polishing mounts using LocTite™ 460 or 454
gel.

180-10083 ChemPol, 5 mm Ø Pk/50
180-10960 ChemPol, 6” x 6” Pk/4

Tip: When using polishing discs 5 mm and larger, we

recommend that a hole be punched in the middle
before it is secured in place to the polishing mount.
This hole helps relieve the buildup of debris that occurs
in the middle and in doing so, produces a higher
quality finish.

Punches
Punches are used to extract small diameter polishing discs from
polishing pads to be mounted to the polishing mounts.
Included are five (5) each of 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 mm disposable
punches featuring a seamless, thin-wall stainless steel tip and
ejection plunger to extract the discs from the tip. For the 5 mm
punch, extraction of the disc is done using tweezers.

With a medical-grade stainless steel tip they are razor sharp and
very durable, but not replaceable once worn.

Item No. Size – Diameter – Ø, Qty

15-92P1-D 1 mm Disposable Punch with Ejection Plunger, Pk/25
15-92P1.5-D 1.5 mm Punch with Spring Ejection Plunger, Pk/25

Adhesive/Glue
Loc-Tite™ 460 and 454 are high performance
adhesives that have proven to be the most reliable
product to secure grinding and polishing discs to
the polishing mounts. Substituting this product
may be possible, but the risk of the disc dislodging
from the mount during processing may cause
damage to the sample.

Using this glue does not guarantee the discs will

not come off during processing, but following the
guidelines provided, risk can be almost eliminated.

Prepare the end/tip of the polishing mount by grinding the surface using a 240 grit abrasive.
This increases overall surface area which is known to improve adhesion.

Avoid exposure of the grinding/polishing tools to alcohol/solvent based grinding fluids or

polishing lubricants. X-Lube™ is solvent-free and what Allied recommends.

Substitution of this is possible if it is not detrimental to the adhesive used to secure the discs to
the mounts.

Applying too much adhesive to the end of the tool will cause the glue to wick onto the
grinding/polishing disc and will affect its performance. Apply firm pressure to the disc to
ensure solid adhesion and contact is made between the disc and the mount.
