Tool Making Guide - Oct 2015
This document contains information about specific tools included in the assortment kit of
tools for the X-Prep™.
It also provides some information about the products, for what they are and/or can be used
and how to make tools for grinding and polishing.
For more specific information about tool selection and operating parameters, please refer to
the reference document titled Tool Selection and General Operating Parameters.

Diamond Grinding Discs
Diamond grinding discs feature a
durable film backing and are available
in abrasive sizes from coarse to very
fine. They are ideal for abrasive
grinding of silicon and other non-
metallic materials.
The FINE diamond discs supplied in this kit are excellent for removing a moderate amount of
silicon, up to 1 mm before they need to be replaced. The resulting finish is excellent for
polishing to follow. They are adhered to the polishing mounts using LocTite™ 460/454
adhesive.

Polishing Mounts
Both a set of 3 and 5 mm mounts are included in the assortment tool kit supplied with the X-
Prep™. They are engineered and precision ground to perform at high speeds without
deflection or vibration. Substitution of these tools is strongly discouraged for safety purposes.
Grinding and polishing discs may be punched or purchased to size to be mounted to these
mounts using Loc-Tite™ 460 or 454 gel.
TIP:
Grind the end of the tool tip across a 240 grit or equivalent
abrasive to prepare the surface for mounting. A rough
surface improves adhesive grip/performance. This process
is a non-chemical/solvent method that is effective at
removing left-over adhesive when the disc is removed
from the mount so it can be used once again.

Punches
Punches are used to extract small diameter polishing discs from
polishing pads to be mounted to the polishing mounts.
Included are five (5) each of 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 mm disposable
punches featuring a seamless, thin-wall stainless steel tip and
ejection plunger to extract the discs from the tip. For the 5 mm
punch, extraction of the disc is done using tweezers.
With a medical-grade stainless steel tip they are razor sharp and
very durable, but not replaceable once worn.

Adhesive/Glue
Loc-Tite™ 460 and 454 are high performance
adhesives that have proven to be the most reliable
product to secure grinding and polishing discs to
the polishing mounts. Substituting this product
may be possible, but the risk of the disc dislodging
from the mount during processing may cause
damage to the sample.
Prepare the end/tip of the polishing mount by grinding the surface using a 240 grit abrasive.
This increases overall surface area which is known to improve adhesion.
Substitution of this is possible if it is not detrimental to the adhesive used to secure the discs to
the mounts.
Applying too much adhesive to the end of the tool will cause the glue to wick onto the
grinding/polishing disc and will affect its performance. Apply firm pressure to the disc to
ensure solid adhesion and contact is made between the disc and the mount.
