Models of Communication

Each representation makes us understand how the communication flows

because we see it through graphs, lines, shapes and drawings. These
representations are the models of communication that makes us understand
what component comes first when we are communicating.

Four Types of Communication Models

1. Linear Model of Communication

Features:
● Also called Aristotelian Model of Communication or Box and
Arrow Model of Communication
● The earliest model of communication
● One-way communication
● Used for Mass Communication
● It contains the speaker, message (speech), and listener
(audience)

Speaker Message Listener

2. Interactive Model of Communication
Features:
● Also called saw tooth model of communication.
● Proposed Janet Beavin,Paul Watz Lawich and Don Jackson
(1967)
● In contrast with the linear model of communication, the
interactive model of communication has the feedback and
interference (external and internal) as its components.

3. Social-Cultural Model of Communication

Features:
● This model stresses the strong influence of social and cultural
elements like customs, traditions, beliefs, attitudes, clothing
styles or thinking patterns on a group of people communicating
with one another.

4. Transactional Model of Communication

Features:
● Also called cyclical or spiral model
● Has strong similarities with the interactive model of
communication when it comes to components.
● Transactional model of communication is different when it
comes to its emphasis on message because it happens almost
simultaneously during the exchange of ideas.

c. ABSTRACTION The teacher and the students will summarize the lesson through the following
questions.

1. What are the four models of communication that we discussed? In

what way are they similar when it comes to components? How are
they different?
2. Choose one model of communication. What are its advantages?
Disadvantages?
3. Which communication model is the best and easy to follow? Why?
