I. Objectives
A. Content Standards The learners value the functions/ purposes of oral
communication.
B. Performance Standards The learners write a 250-word essay of his/her objective
observation and evaluation of the various speakers watched and
listened to.
C. Learning
Competencies/Objectives At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
a. discuss the functions of communication.
b. identify the speaker’s purpose(s).
c. recognize what function of communication
(controlled or Motivation) is being used in a
situation.

IV. Teaching Procedure


A. Daily Routine Greetings, Prayer, Checking of attendance, Checking the
cleanliness of the classroom
B. Introduction/Simple Before the introduction of the new lesson, the teacher and
Review or Recall students will recall the previous lesson about “Intercultural
Communication”.

C. Development of the
Lesson

Teaching Strategies
a. ACTIVITY The teacher will post some pictures that show the controlled and
motivating function of communication on the board. The students
will explain how communication is being used in the pictures.

b. ANALYSIS

The teacher will post the visual aids and will start the discussion
about the first two functions of communication: CONTROL &
MOTIVATION
Concept Notes:

Communication functions refer to how people use


language for different purposes and also refers to how language
is affected by different time, place, and situation used to control
the behavior of people used to regulate the nature and amount of
activities people engage in.

1. Regulation/Control - functions to control one’s behavior.

Examples:
❖ Doctors’ Prescription
“Take your medicine 3 times a day.”
❖ Parents’ Instruction to their child
“Wash the dishes now, or else I won’t allow you to go to the party
later.”

❖ Friends giving advice on what to do


“Move on. He doesn’t love you anymore”

2. Motivation- functions to motivate or to encourage people to


live better and to do better. It is the energy which boosts the
people or influences their behavior in different ways.
c. ABSTRACTION
Examples:
❖ Expressing one’s ambition
“I want to finish up my studies with good grades to be accepted in
a good university.”
❖ Giving praise to the employees/students to boost their
morale.
❖ Giving bonuses, incentives or certificates.

d. APPLICATION/ The students will answer the following questions to wrap-up the
ASSESSMENT lesson:

1. What is function?
2. In relation to your strand, what do you think is the most
suited function of communication to use?
3. How can you apply these functions in real life?

Individual Activity/ DLP


The teacher will give 10 different scenarios and the students will
analyze each scenario and identify what function of
communication (Controlled or Motivation) is being used in the
sentence.

Directions: Analyze each scenario to recognize what function of


communication (Control or Motivation) is being used in the
sentence.

__________1. The teacher introduces her rules in the class


before the discussion.
__________2. The father throws a death glare to his son when
he’s about to talk back.
__________3. Jessa tries to overcome her homesickness in
Korea for the future of her children.
__________4. The boss gives cash prizes to those employees
with complete attendance.
__________5. Marla made a promise to her daughter that she will
buy her a new mobile phone if she made it to the top.
__________6. Karla organized a company outing to celebrate the
success of their business presentation last week.
__________7. Some of the scenes from the movie were blurred
due to its obscenity.
__________8. Jasper can’t go with his friend’s pajama party
because he has a curfew at 8:00 pm.
__________9. Keren inspired those aspirant singers with her
unbelievable talent in singing and her inspiring life story.
__________10. Despite those insulting words from the client,
Jerry still manage to keep his composure.
