Answer the following questions fully:


1) Who was Rosalind? Where did she live and why?
She was the daughter of the banished king. She lived in Duke Frederick's
palace as a companion to her cousin Celia.

2) Rosalind was miserable and depressed. Illustrate


Rosalind was depressed over the banishment of her father, Duke Senior. Her
cousin, Celia, attempts all the time to cheer her up.
3) Why did Rosalind and Celia try to persuade the young man not to
wrestle?
It was seen that the young inexperienced man was about to wrestle a large and
powerful man, who had great experience in wrestling. Even the Duke felt that
the young man could get killed. He asked Celia and Rosalind to speak to the
young man and persuade him to desist from the suicidal attempt.

4) In your opinion, why didn’t the young wrestler mind if he was killed?
I guess he had no one in his life to love or care for, he just felt lonely and
depressed so he wanted to die.

5) How did Duke Frederick react when Orlando told him that he was the
son of Sir Rowland?
The duke was at first pleased with the young man’s courage and enquired
about his identity. The young man said that he was Orlando, the youngest son
of Sir Rowland de Boys. Sir Rowland was a true subject and dear friend of the
banished duke during his lifetime. Frederick hated the fact that Orlando was
the son of his brother’s friend. So, he left the place angrily.

6) " You are your father's daughter" comment
It was said by duke Frederick to Rosalind, when he asked Rosalind to leave the
palace. When Rosalind asked him to explain his decision to banish her, Duke
Frederick replied that she was her father’s daughter, and that was enough.

7) Why did Duke Frederick banish Rosalind from the palace?


Frederick was angered by the mention of his brother’s friend Sir Rowland de
Boys. Moreover, he had felt a feeling of hatred against his niece because the
common people praised her for her virtues and pitied her. He ordered her to
leave his palace and join her banished father.

8) Why did the girls decide to disguise themselves?


Celia had decided to accompany Rosalind and leave the palace. She knew that
if they travelled in rich clothes, it would be unsafe. So, she decided to disguise
herself and Rosalind. Rosalind suggested that it would be even safer if she
dressed like a simple man and pretended to be Celia’s brother. Rosalind
decided to call herself Ganymede, while Celia chose the name Aliena.

9) Ganymede said he would cure Orlando of his love. Discuss


 Ganymede proposed him a cure. Ganymede asked Orlando to come every day
to their cottage. Ganymede would pretend to be Rosalind and Orlando would
court Ganymede in the manner he would have courted Rosalind. Then
Ganymede would imitate the ways the ladies act with their lovers which would
make Orlando feel ashamed of his love and get cured of his love.

10) Celia and Rosalind were good friends. Describe their friendship.
Celia was Rosalind's dearest friend and the two girls were as close as sisters.
Celia's great quality was her loyalty to her friend. When duke senior was
banished, she tried to cheer Rosalind up. When Frederick banished Rosalind,
Celia chooses to go with her.

11) Orlando was a forgiving person. Prove
- Oliver was an evil brother who hated his brother and wanted to kill him at any
cost. When Oliver comes into the forest and gets confronted by a lioness.
Orlando arrived there and saved him. It shows us the nature of brotherly love,
and the way one forgives others.

12) Rosalind continued to deceive Orlando that she was Ganymede. In


your opinion, why did she do this?
- Rosalind deceived Orlando as Ganymede as she wanted to test his love in a
playful and funny way and to make him speak more openly.

13) Jealousy is a very dangerous emotion. What examples are in the play?
- Frederick was jealous from his brother the true duke because he was very
popular and his people loved him. Oliver was jealous from his brother Orlando

14) Forgiveness is a great virtue, but it is not always easy to forgive. Have
there been any situations in your life when you couldn’t forgive someone?
