Instructor
OBJECTIVES
This experiment intended:

1. To familiarize oneself with the different equipment used in Physics

Laboratory.

THEORY
The equipment or apparatus provided for the laboratory experiments must
be handled carefully for they are expensive and will be used by other students.

Familiarization with this equipment means learning how to use and how to
take care of the instruments.

PROCEDURE

The following instruments and devices commonly used in this course:

1. Vernier Caliper 11. Metal pan or weight hanger

2. Micrometer Caliper 12. Ballistic Pendulum
3. Force Table 13. Force Frame
4. Meter Stick 14. Model Balance
5. Triple Beam Balance 15. Iron Stand
6. Spring Balance 16. Tuning Fork
7. Set of weights 17. Melde’s Apparatus
8. Digital timer 18. Kundt’s Tube
9. Inclined plane 19. Projectile Launcher
10. Pulley 20. Motion Sensor

Draw all the instruments/devices enumerated above and research for its
function and purpose. At most, 3 equipment/devices for every sheet of short
bond paper.
1. Vernier Caliper- caliper can measure the outside diameter of an object (outside
vernier), the inside diameter of a hole (inside caliper), or the depth of a hole
(depth probe).

2. Micrometer Caliper- Micrometers help measure short distances or angles. In

addition, people can use them to measure the thickness of thin materials such as
paper, plastics, foil, etc. The most common use for a micrometer is measuring
sheet metal thickness.

3. Force Table- allows us to manipulate and measure the effects of vector

quantities.

4. Meter Stick- is either a straightedge or foldable ruler used to measure length,

and is especially common in the construction industry.
5. Triple Beam Balance- can be used to measure mass directly from the objects,
find mass by difference for liquid, and measure out substances.

6. Spring Balance- provide a method of mass measurement that is both simple

and cheap. The mass is hung on the end of a spring and the deflection of the
spring due to the downwards gravitational force on the mass is measured against
a scale.

7. Set of weights- Laboratory weights are used for two-pan balances. The object
to be weighed is placed on one pan, and weights are placed on the other pan until
the scale is balanced. The weights add up to the weight of the contents of the
other pan.
8. Digital timer- used in process control equipment to assist in process regulation,
they are installed in industrial equipment to record its use and age, and they are
used as consumer electronics for household use and recreational use.

9. Inclined plane- widely used in the form of loading ramps to load and unload
goods on trucks, ships and planes. Wheelchair ramps are used to allow people in
wheelchairs to get over vertical obstacles without exceeding their strength.

10. Pulley- A pulley is a simple machine made with the help of a grooved wheel
and a rope, a wire, or a chain.
11. Metal pan or weight hanger- For use with slotted weights. Available in
aluminum or brass.

12. Ballistic Pendulum- for measuring the velocity of a projectile, such as a bullet.
A large wooden block suspended by two cords serves as the pendulum bob.

13. Force Frame- used at the beginning of the semester to study vector properties
of forces. The force frame can be used as a horizontal or vertical force table.

14. Model Balance- for comparing the weights of two bodies, usually for scientific
purposes, to determine the difference in mass.
15. Iron Stand- supports the iron ring when heating substances or mixtures in a
flask or beaker (using a Bunsen burner) clamps can also be used to hold glassware
on the iron ring.

16. Tuning Fork- are traditionally used to tune musical instruments – the sound
they make is totally pure.

17. Melde’s Apparatus- used to show the effects of vibrations in a stretched cord
and can also be used to investigate the relationship between frequency, tension,
and density.
18. Kundt’s Tube- an experimental acoustical apparatus invented in 1866 by
German physicist August Kundt for the measurement of the speed of sound in a
gas or a solid rod.

19. Projectile Launcher- used to investigate important concepts in two-

dimensional kinematics. A steel ball placed in the launch barrel can be projected
for different launch velocities and launch angles.

20. Motion Sensor- an electronic device that uses a sensor to detect nearby
people or objects. Motion sensors are an important component of any security
system
