Purpose:

The purpose of this online exercise is to develop research skills and resourcefulness
relating to payroll administration in Canada.

Objectives:

1. Identify appropriate online resources for payroll information.


2. Research online sources for employment standards.

Instructions:

Part 1

1. Visit the official Government of Canada website: https://www.canada.ca/home.html


and click on “English”.

In this course, we will use two main sections on the Government of Canada website:

 Jobs  Workplace Standards


o Click on the dropdown menu and select “Jobs” then “Workplace Standards”.
o We will use the “Workplace Standards” section to research the Canada
Labour Code for federally regulated employees and to find the official website
for each Canadian jurisdiction.

 Taxes  Payroll
o Click on the dropdown menu and select “Taxes” then “Payroll”.
o We will use the “Payroll” section to research payroll rules, rates and
regulations required by the Government of Canada.
2. Navigate to the Manitoba Employment Standards website from the Government of
Canada website. Once you are on the official website for Manitoba, you will
research several employment standards.

(Note: Yes, we could also find the Manitoba website by doing a google search, but by
navigating there from www.canada.ca, we know it will be the official website.)

Online steps:

1. Go to https://www.canada.ca/home.html and click on “English”.


2. Click on the menu and select “Jobs” then “Workplace Standards”.
3. Click on “Federally regulated industries and workplaces”
4. There will be a list of jurisdictions with contact information and websites.
5. Click on the Manitoba website for Manitoba Employment Standards.

Using this website, research the following questions for Manitoba:

1. What is minimum wage?


2. What are the standard hours of work?
3. What are the general holidays? (List the name of each general holiday)
4. Is Remembrance Day a general holiday?
5. Can an employer deduct the cost of broken equipment from an employee’s
wages?
6. Can an employer decide when an employee can take vacation?

3. Research the questions 1 to 5 (above) in the following jurisdictions:


1. Federal Labour Standards (Canada Labour Code)
2. Ontario Employment Standards

Part 2

Summarize your findings in the following table and submit your answers to the
