PROFESSIONALISM

How can you become more professional? How can you improve the work you do in the
office to improve your service to the public?

As an Information Technology graduate of St. Nicolas College of Business and Technology, I

thought that I am already a professional after I graduated but as I read the training module, I
learned that being professional is not just being a CPA, Doctor or an Engineer for us to be
considered as professional. As long as you possess the knowledge about your job you can be
considered as one. All you need to have is to equipped yourself with certain qualities and has
a supportive environment behind him/her. I learned that professionalism does not necessarily
come from years of study in a university or a licensure exam given by the government. There
are some people who can show professionalism without formal education and sometimes
individuals with a degree and eligibility show no professionalism in their work, like
government officials/workers. When I started to work at the Department of Education,
Division of Pampanga, I encountered that other employees of DepEd Pampanga are reported
tardy for being late all the time and issued a memorandum. Then our Administrative Officer
told us that always being late or tardy is a serious matter for all employees of DepEd
Pampanga because it can lead to suspension or termination in the service. As a newly hired of
the Division of Pampanga at that time, I promised to myself to always come early. As an
Administrative Assistant in DepEd Pampanga I will use my time wisely in performing the
task that was given to me, I will do my best to fulfill my duty and specialized my knowledge
to my work. Skills can be acquired from experiences, for example it’s been five months since
I was designated to do Service Record, Certificate of Employment and Travel Order of all the
Employees of DepEd Pampanga, so I acquired a skill on encoding the correct data and
different formulas on Microsoft Office. Whenever I’m transacting with clients, I always show
respect and do immediately what he/she wants to get from the office. So that they will be
satisfied and happy with my service and leave the office with a smile in their face. Standards
must achieve to gain professionalism because it is who we are, our enthusiasm or passion is
different from others so let us make every work with excellence, quality and with value.
Spirit depends on other individuals we are working with. We must show respect on every
person we meet at the office regardless of the position we have and treat them fair and equal.
And so, we can build an office filled with equality and fairness. Supportive environment is
always provided for us by the government. Perseverance to work is the indicator of the
quality of our services to the public. I think that without all of these dimensions of being a
professional, a person must not be called professional. Many government employees finished
their studies but do not have passion, dedication, and standard in their respective works. This
Distance Learning Program of the Civil Service Commission will guide you in obtaining the
knowledge required for Professionalism.
