Conversation Class Policies

10% of your final English grade is your grade in conversation class. Conversation classes will begin the week
of September 6th and end the week of November 29th. Classes will meet at the same time every week for 13
weeks. Attendance is mandatory at every class.

Rules:

 You cannot make-up any classes.

 If you are absent on the day of an evaluation, you receive a ONE for that evaluation and will not be
able to make up those points.
 It is YOUR responsibility to sign up for a conversation class during the first or second week of
classes. You will not be allowed to make up any classes you miss because you have failed to enroll
in conversation.
 If you arrive more than 5 minutes late to class, you will be considered absent (you will not receive
points for attendance or evaluations for that day).
 Any exceptions must come from the director.

Grading: In this class, you will be graded in 3 areas: attendance, participation, and performance.
Attendance will be taken during every class. Participation and performance will be graded through
6 random evaluations throughout the semester. Remember that if you miss an evaluation, you
will receive a zero and cannot make it up.

Item Weight
Attendance 13 points (1 point per class)
Participation 18 points (3 points per evaluation)
Performance 18 points (3 points per evaluation)
Total 49 points

Attendance: For each class you attend, you are given 1 point. The class will meet 13 times in total, once a
week for 13 weeks; therefore, the total number of points is 13. You must attend every class and you cannot
make up any classes.

Participation: During 6 out of 13 classes, you are given points for participation. Each of these 6 evaluations
is worth 3 points; therefore, the total number of points is 18. These 6 classes are picked at random; you will
not be told when you are being evaluated. Points are awarded as follows:

3 Student participates frequently throughout class without being prompted, uses only English
2 Student participates occasionally, only when asked, uses some Spanish
1 Student participates rarely, uses Spanish

Performance: During 6 out of 13 classes, you are given points for performance. Each of these 6
evaluations is worth 3 points; therefore, the total number of points is 18. These 6 classes are
picked at random; you will not be told when you are being evaluated. Points are awarded as
follows:

3 Student uses new grammar structures and vocabulary from the unit with very few errors
2 Student uses new grammar structures and vocabulary from the unit with several errors
1 Student rarely uses new grammar structures and vocabulary from the unit
