Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear

learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-test is provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if
you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check you’re learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.
What I Need to Know

You are created according to the image and

likeness of God; hence, you are unique, exceptional,
and special among all creatures. You embody the
dignity that sets you apart from any other kind of
creature. Special and unique, but as a human being,
have you thought of a reason why you experience
unpleasant situations?

It is not new in your thoughts that there are a vast number of issues
of abuse that you can hear from various news outlets, content, and even
social media posts. These news posts are alarming, leading to inhumane
society.

Most of the victims are from different walks of life: rich, poor, and
even those people with special needs. It is so saddening that sexual abuse
remains rampant in the society as the world continues to change.

Human beings are special, but why do these things

happen to them? How can they avoid such issues, if not
stop? What should they do to prevent the abuses? How
do these issues be resolved and yet still live up the
necessary actions to prevent them? This module will
help you answer the above-mentioned questions.

After studying this module, you should be able to:

• identify values that will help stop sexual abuses;

• enumerate sexual abuses in relation to lack of respect for human
dignity;
• recognize groups that advocate the protection of everyone’s dignity,
especially children and women;
• examine issues related to lack of respect for human dignity and
sexuality; and
• perform simple tasks that show respect for sexuality and human
dignity.

what is right and do good for others.

It is also a fact that a person has values that will help him/her attain
human perfection. Some of these values that one needs must be strengthened
to continuously practice protecting his/her dignity.

DEVELOPMENT
What is It

The pictures you have identified in the previous activity are few
examples of sexual abuses happening in the society nowadays. Pornography,
voyeurism, molestation, taking nude pictures and posting them on social
media, child trafficking, and the like are direct violations of human dignity.

There is a corresponding punishment for

anyone who does this as stated in the Republic Act
9262, or otherwise known as the Anti-Violence
Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004. It
is a law that seeks to address the prevalence of
violence against women and their children (VAWC)
by their intimate partners like their husbands or
ex-husbands, live-in partners or former live-in
partners, boyfriends or girlfriends or ex-boyfriends
or ex-girlfriends, dating partners or former dating
partners. Another law that protects every
individual is the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 or Republic Act No. 10175.
This act lays down a comprehensive legal framework for the detection,
investigation, and suppression of cybercrimes such as hacking, identity theft,
cybersquatting, illegal access, spamming, cybersex, and online child
pornography. Lastly, the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse,
Exploitation, and Discrimination Act or Republic Act 7610 which aims to
protect the people of the society especially children. These laws are being
discussed in other subjects like MAPEH and Araling Panlipunan.

Aside from the laws that have been implemented, many organizations
and institutions are promoting advocacies to prevent these violations for the
protection of everyone’s dignity, especially
young men and women.

Below are examples of groups that are

organizing different activities to promote
children and women rights and protection of
human dignity.

a. Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)

DSWD is a government agency mandated by law to develop,
administer, and implement comprehensive social welfare programs

9
designed to uplift the living conditions and empower the disadvantaged
children, youth, women, older persons, person with disabilities, families
in crisis or at-risk, and communities needing assistance.

b. Bantay Bata 163

Bantay Bata 163 is a child-welfare program launched in 1997 to
protect disadvantaged and at-risk children through a nationwide network
of social services. It includes the rescue and rehabilitation of sick and
abused children, and has advocacy on child abuse prevention,
rehabilitation of families in crisis, educational scholarships, community
outreach, and medical and dental missions.

c. Indu Ning Mayap A Usuk Center for Women and Children

Indu Ning Mayap A Usuk Center for Women and Children is an
institution for abused women and children. This center is under the
supervision of Archdiocese of San Fernando, along with Munting Tahanan
ng Nazareth, both located in Mabiga, Mabalacat City, Pampanga.

d. Child Protection Network (CPN) Foundation

CPN Foundation is a non-government organization with expertise on
the prevention and treatment of child abuse. It plays a crucial role in the
establishment of Women and Children Protection Units (WCPUs) in DOH-
retained and LGU-assisted/supported hospitals and training of competent
multidisciplinary teams. A WCPU is synonymous to a “safe haven,” a place
where an abused child comes not only to seek medical intervention but
also to receive other services that facilitate recovery from trauma and
stigmatization.

e. Girls Advocacy Alliance (GAA)

GAA is a global initiative of Plan International, Terre des Hommes and
Defence for Children International and funded by the Dutch Ministry of
Foreign Affairs. It aims to achieve practice and policy change by working
together with communities, government, civil society, and the private
sector, so that girls and young women are economically empowered and
free from all forms of gender-based violence.

f. United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)

UNICEF is a United Nations agency responsible for providing
humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. It works in
over 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, defend their
rights, and help them fulfill their potentials from early childhood to
adolescence.

GENDER AND
10
DEVELOPMENT
Aside from different activities being prepared by these groups, they
also give protections against any forms of abuse, harassment, and
exploitation that may happen to anyone, especially to young people like you.
Also, they provide care, comfort, and legal assistance to victims, if needed.

What’s More

You are a unique creature because you are a

masterpiece of the Lord: you deserve to be loved;
nurtured; and cared for. These acts were lived
and continuously being shared by your parents
since you were a child. From providing
necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter,
educating you to have the knowledge you need to
live well in the future, and teaching you the values needed, which will be used
to appreciate and uplift others.

Self-care and self-respect, as values and virtues, are prerequisites for

learning how to respect others, exercise fairness, practice temperance, and
show prudence --- mother of all virtues. These are few of the things taught
and engraved in your heart that will serve as your weapons to preserve your
dignity.

Dignity is very important to every

individual. It is the recognition that
human beings have a special value
intrinsic to their humanity. Treating other
people with dignity means treating them
the way you would like to be treated.

You have the right to lead a dignified life and fulfill your potential.
Just like you, others have dignity regardless of their status in life. As a result,
you have the right to develop in a way that you may not hurt others – all over
the world, everyone shares the right to be treated with dignity.

You show and treat others with dignity when you live up to the values
taught by your parents and other individuals, each time you lend a helping

11
hand, when you recognize the qualities and talents of others, and especially
when you exert effort to protect each other’s rights.

Respect, camaraderie, and humanity prevail when human dignity is

continually preserved and practiced. When you practice these values, you
practice personhood--- being fair and having the capacity to live with different
kinds of people, regardless of sex, gender, beliefs, culture, and ethnicity.
Hence, values and personhood are keys to end sexual abuses and protections
to human dignity.
