38. Camillo Golgi first started his investigations into the nervous system in a little kitchen
of this hospital, which he had converted into a laboratory. However, the work of
greatest importance, which Golgi carried out, was a revolutionary method of staining
individual nerve and cell structures. This method is referred to as the ‘black
reaction’. This method uses a weak solution of silver nitrate and is particularly
valuable in tracing the processes and most delicate ramifications of cells. All through
his life, he continued to work on these lines, modifying and improving this technique.
Golgi received the highest honors and awards in recognition of his work. He shared
the Nobel prize in 1906 with Santiago Ramony Cajal for their work on the structure
of the nervous system.

a.Who first described the structure of Golgi apparatus? 1

b.Camillo Golgi received the Nobel prize for which work and whom did he share it 1
with?

c.Explain Black reaction.

39. Newton’s first law of motion states that a body at rest will remain at rest position
P only and a body which is in motion continues to be in motion unless otherwise they
are acted upon by an external force. In other words, all objects resist a change in
their state of motion. In a qualitative way, the tendency of undisturbed objects to
stay at rest or to keep moving with the same velocity is called inertia. This is why the
first law of motion is also known as the law of inertia. Answer the following
questions.

7
(i) The first law of motion is also known as
(a)law of inertia
(b) Law of thermodynamics
(c) Both a and b
(d) None of these
(ii) If no external force acts on an object which is at rest. it will
(a) Remain at rest
(b) Start to move
(c) Both a and b can possible
(d) None of these

(iii) State Newton’s first law of motion.

(iv) why Newton’s first law of motion is called law of inertia

A more powerful vehicle would complete a journey in a shorter time than a less
39. powerful one. We talk of the power of machines like motorbikes and motorcars. The
speed with which these vehicles change energy or do work is a basis for their
classification. Power measures the speed of work done, that is, how fast or slow
work is done. Power is defined as the rate of doing work or the rate of transfer of
energy. If anagent does a work W in time t, then power is given by
P= work/time
P= W/T. The unit of power is watt.
(i) The rate of doing work is defined as
(a) Energy
(b) Force
(c) Power
(d) None of these
1
(ii) Total energy consumed divided by total time taken is called as
(a) Average power
1
(b) Instantaneous power

8
(c) Both a and b
(d) None of these
2
(iii) Define 1 Watt of power
