Pneumoconiosis

Definition
• one of a group of interstitial lung disease caused by
breathing in certain kinds of dust particles that
damage your lungs.
• Dust within the size range of 0.5 to 3 micron
• The hazardous effects of dusts on the lungs depend
upon a number of factors such as
A. Chemical composition
B. Health status of the person
exposed.
C. Concentration of dust in the air
D. Period of exposure

1. Silicosis
• Caused by inhalation of Silica, sio2

• Sand stone industries , granite, pottery & ceramic industry

• Incubation period : Few moths to 6 yrs of exposure


• A particle between 0.5 to 3 micron are the most
dangerous.
• There is no effective treatment for silicosis, The only way
that silicosis can be controlled is by dust control
measures.

2. Anthracosis
• Caused by Inhalation of Coal dust particles

• Coal mines

• There are two phase : 1) simple pneumoconiosis


2) progressive massive brosis

• Symptoms : shortness of breath, coughing etc.

3. Byssinosis
• Due to inhalation of cotton bre dust over long
period of time.

• Textile industries

• Symptoms : chronic cough, progressive dyspnoea

4. Bagassosis
• Cause by inhalation of sugar cane dust.

• Cane sugar factories, paper and card board factories.

• Symptoms : breathlessness, cough, slight fever &


haemoptysis.

5. Asbestosis
• Caused by long term exposure to asbestos.

• Asbestos cement factories, reproof textile.

• Asbestos bre : 20-500 micron length , 0.5-50


micron diameter.

• Symptoms : wheezing, persistent cough, shortness


of breath.

6. Farmer’s lung
• Due to the inhalation of mouldy hay or grain dust.

• Agriculture industries

• Symptoms : coughing, mild fever, shortness of breath,


acute illness

7. Siderosis
• Due to iron deposition

• Iron ores & mines, iron & steel industry

• It is also called as welder’s disease
