TEST 2020

UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY - VNUHCM Course title Fluid Mechanics (Cơ học thủy khí)
FACULTY OF TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING Course ID TR1005
Duration 60 Question sheet code 1738
minutes (QSC)
Notes:  ONLY TWO A4 PAPERS WITH HAND-WRITING ARE ALLOWED AS REFERENCE
DOCUMENTS
 Write YOUR FULL NAME, STUDENT CODE AND the QUESTION SHEET CODE on your
Answer Paper
 Rewrite the following statement on your Answer Paper:
“I, Your full name, hereby certify that I only refer to the hand written documents on one
paper format A4 prepared by myself. This test was done by myself without the help of anyone
else. I take all the responsibility for the violations of the online exam regulation.

1) A 12-in-diameter circular plate is placed over a fixed bottom plate with a 0.1-in gap
between the two plates filled wih glycerin. Determine the torque required to rotate the
circular plate slowly at 5 RPM. Assume the velocity distribution in the gap is linear
and that the shear stress on the edge of te rotating plate is negligible. [2.5 points]

2) Steady flow in the nozzle shows the

velocity field :

⃗ ) , where Vo and l
are constant. Determine the ratio of the
magnitude of the acceleration at point (1) to
that at point (2). [2 points]

3) A structure is attached to the ocean floor as shown in the picture . A 2-m diameter
hatch is located in an inclined wall and hinge on one edge.
a) Draw the pressure prism by the sea water on the hatch. [1 points]
b) Determine the minimum air pressure, p1, within the container that will open the
hatch. Neglect the weight of the hatch and the friction in the hinge, given the SG
of the sea water 1.03 [2 points]

4) A tire having a volume of 3.5 ft3 contains air at a gage pressure of 30 psi and a
temperature of 70oF. Determine the density of the air and the weight of the air
contained in the tire, both in SI and BG units [1 point]

5) In a test to determine the bulk modulus of a liquid, it was found that as the absolute
pressure was changed from 15 to 3000 psi, the volume decreased from 10.240 in3 to
10.138 in3. Determine the bulk modulus of this liquid in Pascals. [0.75 point]

6) A mountain lake has an average temperature 10oC and a maximum depth of 50 m.

The barometric pressure is 610 mm Hg. Determine the absolute pressure (in Pascals)
at the deepest part of the lake. [0.75 point]
