TOOLS, UTENSILS AND EQUIPMENT USED IN PREPARING SANDWICH

Introduction to Sandwich

A sandwich is a food typically consisting of

vegetables, sliced cheese or meat, placed on or
between slices of bread, or more generally, any dish
where bread is used as a container or wrapper for
another type of food. Sandwiches are a common form
of snack or lunch, taken to work, school, or picnics to
be eaten as part of a packed lunch. The bread may be
plain or coated with condiments such
as mayonnaise or mustard, to enhance its taste and
texture. As well as being homemade, sandwiches are
also commonly available in restaurants and can be

eaten hot or cold.

History of Sandwich

➢ The sandwich was popularized in England in

1762 by John Montagu, (1718-1792) 4th
Earl of Sandwich, a British statesman and
notorious profligate and gambler, and said
to be the inventor of this type of food so
that he would not have to leave his gaming
table to take supper.
➢ The current form of sandwich making use of
slices of bread found in the West can possibly
be traced back to the Europe in the 18th

➢ The ancient Jewish sage Hillel the Elder is said to have wrapped meat from the
paschal lamb and bitter herbs in an unleavened bread.
➢ From Morocco to Ethiopia to India, bread is baked in flat rounds, contrasting
with the European loaf tradition.
➢ The popularity of the sandwich in Spain and England increased dramatically
in the 19th century, when the rise of Industrialization and the working classes
made quick, portable and inexpensive meals essentials.
➢ In the US, the sandwich was first sold as a tasty meal at dinner. At the
beginning of 20th century, when bread became a staple of the American diet,
