WEEK 1
RESEARCH DESIGN
- It is a complete sequence of steps or procedures that need to be followed when obtaining the needed data during
an investigation.
- It serves as a guide during the actual experimentation.
- It minimizes the cost of experimentation while maximizing the gathered information relevant to the problem.
- It also validates the statistical test because it takes into consideration all the assumptions that went through the
process of deriving the various statistics.
Before starting your paper, you need to determine how you plan to construct the design of your study. The research
design refers to the general approach you use to combine the multiple components of the research method in a consistent
and logical manner, which in turn considers that the research problem is solved effectively; it is the blueprint for data
gathering, sampling, testing, measurement, analysis, and interpretation of data.
This is very important: the research problem determines the type of design you can use, not the other way around!
The function of a research design is to make sure that the observations, evidence, and results obtained enables you to
address the research problem as simply as possible, and in an appropriate manner. The design of an experiment depends
on the type of research being undertaken and the nature of the conditions under which the investigation is done.

Planning a Research Design

1. identifies the subject of the study, Subject is the main material being used in the experiment also called the
experimental unit and it can be a person, animal, plot in a field, a plant, a leaf or a model of a device
2. the variables,
3. the controls
4. the experimental and control group
5. instruments and devices to be used in the experiment
6. statistical tools to be used

Treatment - denotes any procedure done on the experimental unit. The effect of this procedure is to be measured and
analyzed.

Significance - - serves as a guide during the conduct of an experimental investigation; minimizes cost while gaining
maximum information relevant to the problem; the assumptions that underlie within the selected statistical test are
considered in the design of the experiment; this makes the statistical test of significance valid

Principles of a Research Design

Replication
- is a very necessary element in the design of any research
- experiment should be repeated several times to find an estimate of variations among observations on the group of
subjects treated like
- allows researchers to assess the significance of the observed differences
Randomization
- refers to the assignment of the experimental subjects to the treatments by chance
- done to create equivalent groups prior to the experiment
- tends to average out differences among groups

Local Control - - is done when balancing, grouping and blocking of experimental units are employed in the adopted design

Control of Extraneous Variables

- in an experimental design, we have to make sure that no outside or extraneous variables may affect the
experimental subjects.
- the control of extraneous variables
Significance of Research Design:
(1.) Clearly describe the research problem and justify its selection.
(2.) Review previously published literature associated with the problem area.
(3.) Clearly and explicitly specify hypotheses [i.e., research questions] central to the problem selected.
(4.) Effectively describe the data which will be necessary for an adequate test of the hypotheses and explain how
such data will be obtained; and
(5.) Describe the methods of analysis which will be applied to the data in determining whether the hypotheses are
true or false.
