Final Essay

Comparison and Contrast

For the final for this class we are assigned to do an essay that compare and contrast two art

works. That are both similar and different we have to choose the artwork from inside our class

book. Which is called “living with Art”, now to compare and contrast means to examines two or

more topics such as objects, people, or ideas, for example comparing their similarities and

contrasting their differences. Today I am going to compare and contrast two artwork works that I

picked out. Using the subject of light to determine the alikeness and the difference of the two

paintings.

The artworks that I chose to do are “Boys on the beach” and “The Visit” as the two artworks,

both sharing the similar subject light though one is more implied light whereas the other using

plain lighting. To start off the artist who made “Boys in the Beach” was Joaquin Sorolla while

the other artwork “The Visit” is made by Manuel Alarez Bravo. As you can tell both of these

artworks are made by two different people but they both uses the same subject but with

different contents. The first art “Boys on the Beach” was made is 1901 while the other one was

made in 1997. The “Boys on the Beach” was made with Oil and “The Visit” was made from

gelatin silver print. For more details about the light and what it is, light represents works of

two-dimensional art to define and describe figures and spaces. Referring to Bastida’s “Boys on

the Beach” (figure 1) The painting pictures three boys lying on wet sand while seawater swirls
around them. Sorolla depicts light in several ways. Note how each boy’s reflection appears

beside him. This is light reflected on the wet sand. Light also creates reflections on the boys’

bodies. Sorolla uses small patches of white paint to simulate the glare of light reflecting off

wet skin. These white patches all appear on the boys’ left sides because Sorolla wants you to

see that they all share the light of the same hot sun, which is above and to the right of the

painting.

The light from the sun creates shadows under the boys’ heads, these shadows fall

opposite the sun. Whereas Bravo’s photographs “The Visit” (figure 2) messes with the

fundamental purpose that light sever us but also a little bit different. But the representation of

light in both art pieces plays the same role. For example, both of the artworks use light to

reflect off the right on both of the pieces. You cannot see the source of light in Manuel

Álvarez Bravo’s photo-graph “The Visit,” but from the way the shadows fall that it is off to the

right, and that the statues are facing almost directly into it. Both artworks are of different size

figure 1 is 43 3/8 x 72 4/5” and figure 2 is 6 5/8 x 3 3/8” although both of them have different

sizes surprisingly it does not affect either of the quality of the works. Anyways I believe that

both artworks are Idealistic because in (figure 1) it is based of a writing and (figure 2) is based

on religion.

In (figure 1) The theme of children in water can be traced in the works of Sorolla since the

turn of the century. In 1899, the artist painted "Sad legacy" Grand Prix of the world exhibition

in Paris in 1900, where he painted swimming in a sea of children affected by the epidemic of

poliomyelitis in Valencia. To social issues he never addressed, but created a set full of light

and joy paintings, heroes of which were frolicking in the water children "Children on the

seashore" (1903), "Midday on the beach in Valencia" (1904), "Sea idyl. Boys on the beach
Sorolla wrote in 1909, during a three-month stay in Valencia. The artist came to his hometown

after a long successful trip to the US three solo exhibition in new York sold 195 paintings a

portrait of President Taft in the White House and selflessly worked in the open air. The

characters in the movie "Boys on the beach lying on the sand with no clothes on. To Sorolla

theme of the Nude child's life in the open air has worked for other authors, including John

Singer Sargent. Artists friends Sorolla Sargent presented one of the sketches to the "tragic

legacy", and Sargent, in turn, participated in the preparation of a personal exhibition Sorolla in

1908 in London, where he then lived. "The boys on the beach" was an example virtuoso

transmission of light in the picture. Traditionally, the canvas relates to the impressionistic

period of art Sorolla. However, his technique differs significantly from the techniques of

French colleague that strokes sharper and the figures more realistic.

The work clearly emerges individual style and confidence of a Mature artist.. The degree

of relaxation in the postures of boys increases as the distance from the audience and increase

the intensity of the colors: from the intense first child is pale with light hair, to the totally

relaxed third dark bronze-red tan. Sun glare on the ground, the very "dry", the boy transferred

to a matte-white paint layers; the second, which is partly immersed in water, they are lighter

and more intense; completely wet the boy in the background just shines in the sun. "The boys

figure 2) I couldn’t find much insight of figured to painting mainly because it was a

photograph rather than an actual drawing but what I did find was where it was made in what
year was made and where is that now. But I believe that is mainly about religion in angels

from the discussion I gave about it previously. But I can’t say that other than the figure 1

painting the second one has symbolism in his photograph. A represents the Christianity in the

impact of religions during that time. What was up to me and I was very curious was the fact

that this photograph did not have any type of background or reason of it being made. There

isn’t much history behind it only the fact that it involves Christianity. And that it resembles

figure 1 by using light and have it bounce off the photo like it does in the first figure. But it’s

getting my own interpretation I can say this person took this photo to justify the beliefs that

they are into. And spread light on this religion and how it operates. Using the light to reflect

the right of the photo to reflect off of their hands to make it shine more made it seem like it

was more powerful. Just like Figure 1 using it the life plays a very important factor in both

pieces. A conclusion I’m a love to look into figure 2‘s photographs more and find out exactly

why they took this photo.
