SECTION A: COMPREHENSION
Read the following extract and then answer the questions that follow:

EXCERPTS FROM A CAT’S DIARY

Monday, Day 752

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine
lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that
keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining
the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

Wednesday, Day 761

Today my attempts to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they
were walking almost succeeded; must try this at the top of the stairs. In an
attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again introduced
myself to vomit on their favourite chair; must try this on their bed.

Sunday, Day 765

Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in an attempt to make
them aware of what I am capable of, and to try and strike fear into their hearts.
They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was…Hmmm.
Not working according to plan.

Wednesday, Day 768

I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason, I was chosen for
the water torture. This time, however, it included a burning foamy chemical
called “shampoo”. What sick minds could invent such a liquid? My only consolation
is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

Saturday, Day 771

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary
throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odour
of the glass tubes they call “beer…” More importantly, I overheard that my
confinement was due to my power of “allergies”. Must learn what this is and how
to use it to my advantage.

2
Tuesday, Day 774
I am convinced the other captives are snitches. The dog is routinely released and
seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other
hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he
reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety
is assured, but I can wait, it is only a matter of time…

Question 1:
1.1 Who are the cat’s “captors”? (1)
1.2 How do we know that the cat has been held in “captivity” for a long
time? (1)
1.3 How does the cat try to kill his captors on Day 761? Use your
OWN WORDS. (2)
1.4 Why did the cat’s plan to shock his captors by showing them a
“headless body” not work? (2)
1.5.1 What was the “water torture” the cat describes on Day 768? (1)
1.5.2 How does the cat get back at his captors during this “torture”? (1)
1.6 In your OWN WORDS, say what the cat thinks of the dog and the
bird as described in Day 774. (4)
1.7 Give the correct word for the “metal room” that the cat refers to on
Day 774. (1)
1.8 Did you find the passage funny? Give a reason for your answer. (2)

SECTION C: SUMMARY
Question 4:
Instructions:

 Summarise the article in 60-70 words in which you list SEVEN ways in which
we can keep our cats cool in the summer heat.

5
 Write down only ONE FACT per sentence.
 Use your OWN WORDS.
 Remember that a summary must have a heading and a word count.
 Pay attention to SPELLING.

Keep your cat cool in the summer heat.

During the summer months, cats are just as at risk of dehydration as the rest
of us. This is a serious condition that could lead to serious illness or even death.
Here are some tips to keep your cat cool in the heat.

Although it is common sense, you should check your cat’s water bowl regularly
and fill it up whenever it is low.

If you have an outdoor cat and there are no natural shady spots in your garden,
create one by placing some cloth or cardboard over an area to keep the sun out.

Matted hair traps heat so give them a daily groom if possible. This is especially
important for long-haired cats.

A very active cat that is running around on a hot day will quickly become
exhausted and dehydrated. Encourage your cat to relax when outside
temperatures are high.

If temperatures really soar, then it is worth considering keeping your cat inside
during the hottest hours of the day.

It is less common for cats to travel in cars than dogs, but they are just as much
at risk. Never leave your cat in the car. If you have to, make sure that air is
circulated inside the car, by putting on the aircon, for example.

6
Don’t forget cats are also at risk for sunburn, especially those with white ears
and noses. This can lead to painful blistering and sores, and long-term exposure
can lead to skin cancers. Buy pet sunscreen to apply to the hairless areas on the
end of the ears and nose.

We know you love your cat, so keep them cool during those hot summer days!

SECTION E: SEEN POEM

Question 14:

Study the below SEEN poem and answer the questions that follow:

Timothy Winters
Charles Causley
Timothy Winters comes to school
With eyes as wide as a football-pool,
Ears like bombs and teeth like splinters:
A blitz of a boy is Timothy Winters.

His belly is white, his neck is dark,

And his hair is an exclamation-mark.
His clothes are enough to scare a crow
And through his britches the blue winds blow.

8
When teacher talks he won't hear a word
And he shoots down dead the arithmetic-bird,
He licks the pattern off his plate
And he's not even heard of the Welfare State.

Timothy Winters has bloody feet

And he lives in a house on Suez Street,
He sleeps in a sack on the kitchen floor
And they say there aren't boys like him anymore.

Old Man Winters likes his beer

And his missus ran off with a bombardier,
Grandma sits in the grate with a gin
And Timothy's dosed with an aspirin.

The social worker lies awake

But the law's as tricky as a ten-foot snake,
So Timothy Winters drinks his cup
And slowly goes on growing up.

At Morning Prayers the Master helves

for children less fortunate than ourselves,
And the loudest response in the room is when
Timothy Winters roars "Amen!"

So come one angel, come on ten

Timothy Winters says "Amen
Amen amen amen amen."
Timothy Winters, Lord.

Amen
