LABORATORY EXERCISE NO. 2

FINESS TEST OF CEMENT

INTRODUCTION

The fineness of cement has an important bearing on the rate of hydration and hence on
the rate of gain of strength and also on the rate of evolution of heat. Finer cement offers
a greater surface area for hydration and hence faster the development of strength. The
fineness of grinding has increased over the years. But now it has got nearly stabilized.
Different cements are ground to different fineness. The particle size fraction below 3
microns has been found to have the predominant effect on the strength at one day while
3-25 micron fraction has a major influence on the 28 days strength. Increase in fineness
of cement is also found to increase the drying shrinkage of concrete.

OBJECTIVE(S):

1. To determine the fineness of cement using sieve analysis

APPARATUS:

PROCEDURE:

1.  Take 500 grams (1/2 Kg) of cement for the test sample and name it as
(w1).

2.  Rub the cement particle well with your hands so that no lumps are left.

3. Now pour the 500 g cement content in the sieve and close it perfectly with
the sieve lid. (or any cover you can use at home)

4. Shake using your hand but you need to make sure that the sieving
operation is done in all the directions.

5. Brush the sieve base gently with the bristle brush so that nothing is left on
the sieve surface.

6. Now just weigh the retained amount of cement on the sieve and note it as
(w2).

7. Now you need to find the percentage of the weight of cement-retained on

the sieve.

8. For calculation the formula is;

9. Repeat the test for at least five times to minimize the risk of errors.
