specifications given here under, the former shall prevail to the extent applicable.
1.1.4 If the Particular specification given hereunder differ from IS Code provisions in
any respect, the former shall prevail.

1.1 STRUCTURAL DESIGN

The Constructions of piles, pile caps and grade beams will be done through a soil
and Foundation Engineer Consultant and vetted by IISc, Bangalore / IIT, Chennai
and NIT, Surathakal as per IS: 456:2000 and IS: 2911 (Part I Section 2) and
except for the provisions which follows at paras 2 to 4 below:

2. PILES
2.1 The piles shall be bored cast-in-situ type as per IS code 2911-part I section 2-
1979 as amended upto date.
2.2 The piles shall be of reinforced cement concrete of design mix of specified grade
by using not less than 400 kg of cement per cubic metre of concrete. The cement
concrete shall be subject to cube test for compression strength and its
acceptability will be as per CPWD specifications 2019 vol I & II. The clear cover
to main reinforcement in pile shaft shall not be less than 60 mm.

2.3 BORING AND CONCRETING FOR PILES:

2.3.1 Temporary guide casing shall be than lowered in the bore hole upto depth not
less than 1 metre. The size of cutting tool / chisel should not be less than the
diameter of the pile by more than 75 mm.
2.3.2 The centre line of the guide casing shall be checked with respect to the reference
points before continuing further boring.
2.3.3 Boring shall be done with the use of direct mud circulation through chisel and by
chiseling the soft / hard rock. All piles shall be socketed into the founding strata to
a depth equal to the diameter of the piles. The contractor shall inform the
Engineer-in-charge as soon as the founding strata is met with. Samples obtained
from the bore hole shall be preserved and the Engineer-in-charge’s approval
obtained to access the bearing founding strata. After obtaining approval, further
chiseling to a depth equal to the diameter of the pile shall be carried out and the
final approval of the Engineer-in-charge shall be obtained before stopping boring
/ chiseling. The rate quoted shall be inclusive of chiseling into the soft / hard rock.
Samples of hard rock obtained from each pile driving shall be preserved and
submitted to the Engineer-in-charge.
2.3.4 Bentonite slurry shall be pumped by high pressure mud circulation pumps into
the bore hole through the cutting tool and the same shall be allowed to overflow
the bore. The materials which come out along with the bentonite slurry shall be
passed through channels and shall be collected in sediment tanks where
sediments settle and bentonite can be re-used, provided the same satisfies the
requirements as per IS Code.
2.3.5 After the founding strata is reached, the bore shall be flushed by bentonite slurry
for about 15 minutes with direct circulation chisel. The pumping for the flushing is
done by use of mud circulation pump. During flushing, the chisel is kept resting
on the founding strata to remove all the loose sediments which might have
accumulated on founding strata the direct mud circulation chisel and connecting
rod are removed from the bore hole thereafter.
2.3.6 Reinforcement bars may be tack welded to ring to provide more rigidity to the
cage. Roller cover blocks may be provided to the cage at approximately 2
metres intervals and suitably staggered.

2.3.7 Reinforcement cage in suitable length shall then be lowered.

2.3.8 Before concreting, the bore shall once again be flushed by a bentonite slurry
through tremie to ensure that the bottom is cleaned after placing the
reinforcement.
2.3.9 The Concrete shall be done by tremie.
2.3.10 Before pouring the concrete through tremie, the bottom of the concreting funnel
should be closed with a steel plate. After the funnel is filled with concrete, the
plate is removed and concrete is discharged. Thereafter, concreting is done in a
continuous manner up to the required level. It should always be ensured that the
bottom of the tremie pipe is minimum 2m within concrete to avoid mixing of fresh
concrete with bentonite slurry. Concrete shall be filled approximately 600 to
900mm above the cut off level so that good concrete will be available at the cut of
level. In case the cut off level of the pile is the same as the top of the guide
casing, then the concrete should be allowed to over flow till good concrete is
visible. The specifications for bentonite shall confirm to the requirement given in
IS 2911 – (Part-I/ Sec-2/Para A-3). In case of pile where cut off level is higher
than the ground level or close to the ground level, concrete should sufficiently
overflow before the guide casing is withdrawn.
2.3.11 The slump for concrete mix shall be 150 to 180mm.
2.3.12 The pile shall be provided vertically and in true position. The control of alignment
if the piles shall be governed as per clause 7.1.2 of IS 2911(Part-1 of Sec-2)
1979.
2.3.13 If this tolerance is exceeded, the Engineer-in-Charge may reject such pile(s) or
call upon the contractor suitable strengthen if and redesign the pile/cap/grade
beams for which no extra payment will be made to the contractor. If these pile
are rejected by the Engineer-in-Charge on account of their improper location,
deviation from verticality by more than the tolerance specified (or) due to any
other reasons, the contractor shall reinstall suitable new piles with proper
workmanship and materials to the satisfaction of the Engineer-in-Charge without
expenditure due to increased size of the pile cap/grade beams, the same shall be
borne by the contractor.

2.3.14 In Pile grouping the distance centre of piles shall not be less than 2.5 times the
diameter of the pile. A record shall be kept of the volume of concrete poured into
each pile and this shall be compared with the theoretical volume of the bore in
order check continuity of pile.

2.4 MODE OF MEASUREMENT FOR THE PILES

2.4.1 The length of piles shall be taken to be the clear distance from bottom of pile cap
to the tip of the pile
2.4.2 The rate shall also include empty boring from ground level to cut off level and
dismantling the piles up to cut off level wherever required removal of debris,
including the dismantled piles to be disposed off up to distance of 50m. No
separate payment shall be made on this account.
2.4.3 The reinforcement in the piles, pile cap, grade beams, etc. shall be measured
and paid for separately under relevant items in the agreement. The rate shall
include the cost of tack welding of reinforcing bars wherever required in addition
to tying with binding wire.
3 PILE CAPS/GRADE BEAMS

3.1 RCC pile cap over the pile (or) group of piles shall be constructed integral with
grade beams at required levels as directed by Engineer-in-Charge
3.2 The Minimum length of the dowel bars to be left for extension of the column shall
be 57 times the dia of the bar. The details of number and sizes of bars to be
provided shall be supplied by the Department. Not more than one third of the
dowel bars shall be terminated at a particular section of the column.

4 VERTICAL LOAD TESTING (COMPRESSION)

4.1 The routine/initial tests on single pile shall be carried out as per the procedure
laid down in IS code of practice, IS 2911 (Part-IV) 1985 as amended upto date.
However, the total test load for routine tests shall not exceed 1.5 times the safe
working load or up to a settlement of 10% of the pile diameter or 12mm
whichever occurs earlier.

4.2 The safe load on piles shall be determined in accordance with clause 6.1.5 and
6.1.1.5.1 of IS code 2911 (Part-IV) as amended up to date.

4.3 Working piles shall be not be used as Anchor piles for doing load test.

5. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

5.1 The test shall be considered satisfactory if the assessed safe load from the test
works out to be not less than the estimated safe bearing capacity of the pile and
the behavior of the pile (or) the pile group during the period of testing does not
disclose any defects.

5.2 If the pile group does not satisfy the above acceptance conditions, corrective
measures shall be proposed by the contractor and got approved by the Engineer-
in-Charge. These corrective measures may include provision of additional piles
etc. So as to give adequate bearing capacity to the piles. If in the opinion of the
Engineer-in-Charge it is necessary to reject the pile and provide entirely new
additional as corrective measure the contractor shall do so. The decision of the
Engineer- in-Charge of the work shall be final in the matter. The additional
expenditure incurred by the contractor for such corrective measures shall be
borne by the contractor.

5.3 Part payment only shall be made for the working piles till be routine test on

piles are carried out satisfactory as per specifications and the test results are
approved by the Department.

5.4 For routine load tests, payment for the test piles and for testing shall be made to the

tenderer, only when load test is found to be satisfactory. For test piles and tests
which are found unsatisfactory or which are not complete due to any reason
whatsoever, no payment shall be made to the contractor.
