Hooke’s Law
Shear stress
Modulus of elasticity
2. Draw stress-strain curve for tension test on mild steel and explain
important point.
3. A steel bar is 20 mm dia and 1 m long. It is subjected to axial tensile

4. A bar is subjected to force as shown in fig. Take E = 200 KN/mm . Find
deformation in length of the bar.
5. A copper bar of 20 mm dia is tightly fitted inside a steel tube of external
dia of 30 mm. the length of composite section is 100 mm. it is subjected
to axial force 60 KN. Find stress in steel and copper

6. A rectangular bar 40 mm wide and 30 mm thick is 0.5 m long. It is acted
upon by axial tensile force of 120 KN. E = 200 Gpa and µ=0.25. Find
Change in dimensions of the bar.
7. A rigid wheel of 1.25 m Dia. Is to fitted with a steel tyre of 1.24912 m
dia. Find the minimum temp up to which the type is to be heated so that it
can be fitted over the wheel. Take Co-efficient of thermal expansion as
-6 5 2
12 x 10 /c and E=2 X 10 N/mm . also find hoop stress in the tyre.
8. A weight of 50.8 KN acts suddenly on a bar of 18 mm dia. Length of bar
5 2
1 m. E=2 X 10 N/mm . find instantaneous stress and modulus of
resilience.
9. A tension test on mild steel specimen gave the following results.
Original dia of bar – 10 mm
Original gauge length – 50 mm
Final diameter – 6.5 mm
Final gauge length – 58.5 mm
Ultimate load – 36 KN
Breaking load – 28 KN
Yield load – 24 KN
ASSIGNMENT- II

2. Explain parallel axis theorem.
3. Explain perpendicular axis theorem.
4. Find Ixx and Iyy for a T- section in figure (a).
5. Find Ixx and Iyy for a I- section in figure (b).
1. Draw & write effective length of the column for different end conditions.
2. Explain following:
Radius of gyration
Assumption of Euler’s formula
Limitation of Euler’s formula
3. 6m long hollow rectangular steel section has external dimension 60mm x
80mm and 6 mm thickness, is used as strut keeping one end hinged and
other end fixed. Calculate appropriate inertia, effective length and euler’s
load. Take E= 200 Gpa.
4. A steel rod of 5 m long and 40 mm dia. Is used as a column with one end
fixed and other free. Determine the crippling load by Euler’s formula.

Take E = 200 KN/mm .
5. A hollow circular column having internal dia 400 mm and thickness 100
mm is used as a column. If slenderness ratio is 90. One end of column is
restrained against position and direction while other end is restrained
against position. Calculate actual length of the column.
