3. A steel bar is 20 mm dia and 1 m long. It is subjected to axial tensile

deformation in length of the bar.

dia of 30 mm. the length of composite section is 100 mm. it is subjected
to axial force 60 KN. Find stress in steel and copper

6. A rectangular bar 40 mm wide and 30 mm thick is 0.5 m long. It is acted
upon by axial tensile force of 120 KN. E = 200 Gpa and µ=0.25. Find
Change in dimensions of the bar.
7. A rigid wheel of 1.25 m Dia. Is to fitted with a steel tyre of 1.24912 m
dia. Find the minimum temp up to which the type is to be heated so that it
can be fitted over the wheel. Take Co-efficient of thermal expansion as

9. A tension test on mild steel specimen gave the following results.
 Original dia of bar – 10 mm
 Original gauge length – 50 mm
 Final diameter – 6.5 mm
 Final gauge length – 58.5 mm
 Ultimate load – 36 KN
 Breaking load – 28 KN
 Yield load – 24 KN

3. A timber beam 100 mm wide and 150 mm deep is simply supported over
a span of 4m. find maximum u.d.l the beam can carry over span if

bending stress in the beam is not exceed 80 N/mm .
4. A beam of T-section having flange of dimensions 200 x 30 mm and web
dimension 320 x 30 mm is subjected to shear force of 25 KN. Find the
maximum shear stress and draw the stress distribution curve.
5. A hollow pipe has external dia. 120 mm and thickness 15 mm. it is used
as 2 m long cantilever beam. If it carries a full u.d.l of 6 KN/m and 4 KN
point load at free end. Then find maximum bending stress. Neglect self
weight.
ASSIGNMENT- V

1. Cross section of wooden beam is 100 x 240 mm. It is simply supported


with 4 m span. Find out u.d.l that can be placed on its full span so that
deflection at centre is 6 mm.
2. A simply supported beam of span 4 m is subjected to a central point load
“w” KN. If the maximum deflection of beam at centre is 1 mm. find the

central point load “w” amd slope of beam at supports. Take E = 2.1 x 10

N/mm , I = 5.18 x 108 mm .
3. A steel tube of external 60 mm and 8 mm thickness is used as simply
supported beam of span 4m. If it deflects 10 mm due to a central point
load, find magnitude of the point load. Take E = 200Gpa.
4. A simply supported beam of I-section has following dimensions. Depth

of beam = 50mm. Flexural rigidity=19.4 x 10 N/mm . Span of beam =
4.5 m. if maximum deflection does not exceed by 1/750. Find out central
point load.
5. Explain slope & deflection for U beam with sketch.
ASSIGNMENT- VI

1. Draw & write effective length of the column for different end conditions.
2. Explain following:
 Radius of gyration
 Assumption of Euler’s formula
 Limitation of Euler’s formula
3. 6m long hollow rectangular steel section has external dimension 60mm x
80mm and 6 mm thickness, is used as strut keeping one end hinged and
other end fixed. Calculate appropriate inertia, effective length and euler’s
load. Take E= 200 Gpa.
4. A steel rod of 5 m long and 40 mm dia. Is used as a column with one end
fixed and other free. Determine the crippling load by Euler’s formula.

Take E = 200 KN/mm .
5. A hollow circular column having internal dia 400 mm and thickness 100
mm is used as a column. If slenderness ratio is 90. One end of column is
restrained against position and direction while other end is restrained
against position. Calculate actual length of the column.

6. A rectangular column size 300 mm x 200 mm is subjected to two equal
point load 150 KN each one at 30 mm & other at 50 mm away from
centroid on longer side axis. Draw stress distribution diagram of column.
ASSIGNMENT- VIII

1. Explain principle plane & principle stress.


2. Explain mohr circle method to find normal and tangential stress on an
oblique plane.
3. A strained body subjected to tensile stress of 200 N/mm2 and comp.
Stress of 100 N/mm2 on the mutually perpendicular planes along with
shear stress of 50 N/mm2. Find the principal planes and principle
stresses.
4. At a point in a strained material normal tensile stresses 100 Mpa and 200
Mpa along with shear stress 300 Mpa are acting. Find normal, tangential
and resultant stress on a plane inclined at 45 with the axis of first normal
stress. Also find principal stresses. (also solve with mohr-circle method)
5. At a certain point in a strained material two tensile stresses 600 N/mm2
and 400 N/mm2 are acting. Find normal stress, tangential stress and
resultant stress on a plane inclined at 60 with the axis of major stress.

2. Explain the assumptions in the theory of torsion.
3. A solid shaft made of steel having dia. Of 50 mm and length 700 mm
transmits 100 KW at 160 r.p.m. calculate maximum shear stress produced

and angle of twist in degree. Take c = 0.8 x 10 N/mm .
4. A hollow circular steel shaft having internal to external diameter ratio
4/5, transmits 4 KW at 6 Hz speed. The maximum torqe is 25% more
than the mean torqe. If the angle of twist is limited to 4 m length. Find the
diameters. Take c=80 Gpa.
5. Calculate suitable diameter of Shaft to transmit 220 Kw power at 150 rpm

if permissible shear stress is 68 N/mm .
