LEARNING COMPETENCIES

Enumerate what to do before, during and after an earthquake and volcanic

eruptions. (S6ES-IVb-2)

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

1.Enumerate what to do before, during and after an earthquake .

2.Enumerate what to do during and after volcanic eruptions.
3.Make an Emergency Preparedness Plan and Kit.

INTRODUCTION
Are you prepared for an earthquake and volcanic eruption? Do you know
what to do before, during and after earthquake and volcanic eruptions? Seismologist
do not have instruments to predict exactly when and where earthquake and volcanic
eruptions occur and how strong they will be. However, through data analysis and
studies on the occurrence of previous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions they can
give warnings. This can be done since some earthquake and volcanic eruptions can
be predicted to some extent. People who live within the vicinity of the volcano are
advised to take precautionary measures when signs of possible eruption are being
observed. This module will help you know what are the precautionary measures you
do in case of calamities.

ABSTRACTION
Why is it important to be prepared when there is an earthquake or volcanic
eruption in your place? What do you think are the precautionary measures you do
before, during and after an earthquake and volcanic eruptions?

Are you ready to learn something? Read on !

EARTHQUAKE

Earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes

causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth’s crust or
volcanic action. It differs in strength and location.
Recent earthquakes remind us that we live on a restless planet. But there
are many important things we can do before, during, and after an earthquake to
protect ourselves, our homes, and our families.

What to do Before, During ,and After an Earthquake

Before an Earthquake:
It is important for individuals, families, organizations and communities to identify their
risk, make a plan, create a disaster kit, and remove, relocate, or secure anything that
can :
-Fall and hurt someone
-Fall and block an exit
-Fall and start a fire
-Require a lengthy or costly clean-up
During an Earthquake:
DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table and head
or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table
or desk near you, cover your face and head inside corner of with your arms and
crouch in an inside corner of the building..

7
After an Earthquake:

Safely evacuate. Please note that aftershocks could happen. These additional
shaking events can be strong enough to do additional damage to already weakened
structures and can occur in first hours, days, weeks, or even months after the
earthquake. Have professional engineer or local building official inspect the
structural integrity of your home and/or building for potential damages. This should
also include:
-Inspecting your chimney for unnoticed damage that could lead to fires. Even a few
for cracks not obvious at first glance can create an unsafe condition the next time
the fire placed is used.
-Checking for gas, electrical ,sewer, and water line damages to avoid fire and
hazardous leaks.

VOLCANO

Volcano is a mountain or hill, typically conical, having a crater or vent through

which lava, rock fragments, hot vapour and gas are being or have been erupted from
the earth’s crust
When we think of volcanic eruptions,we can imagine it as pouring fire on the
earth’s surface and burning it. Lava flows out land thick accumulation of volcanic
dust may do considerate damage to property. The really destructure feature of
volcanic activity is the solid debris. The mixture of debris and gas is capable of
moving down the mountainside. No living thing can survive its path. Poisonous fumes
and gases coming out of the crater pollutes the environment.
But even if volcanoes eruptions are destructive, some geologist still belive that
volcanoes maybe partly responsible for the air we breathe.Although they send out
poisonous fumes, they also send out nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon
dioxide.People, animals and plants need these gaes to stay alive.
During volcanic eruption, hydrogen and oxygen are released which combine to
from water.
But the most widespread benefit of volcanic eruption is that they make the soil
fertile.
8
Among the measures necessary before a volcanic eruption to occur are:
1. Disseminate information among affected communities. They should give them
time to prepare for possible relocation.
2. Identify possible pathways of lava flows.
3. Seek a safe area for relocation.
4. Store up canned goods and other daily necessities.
5. Pack up clothes and valuables.
7. Harvest crops.
8. Shut down electrical connections of the community.
9. Restrict areas within proximity to possible lava flows.
10. Prepare pathways for lava flows.

During the eruption is necessary that :

1. People stay in evacuation centers.

2. Cover your mouth and nose with wet cloth.
3. Listen for announcement.

After a volcanic eruption, it is important to :

1. Wait for an official advisory from the government if it is safe to return to former
abodes or residential areas.
2. Cultivate the land.
3. Await the advisory from the agriculturists if is safe to plant again.
4. Reconnect electrical services.
4. Help out in rebuilding the community.

EXERCISE NO.1

Direction: Enumerate the following precautionary measures. Write B for before, D

for during, and A for an after an earthquake.

______1. Check yourself and others for injuries.

______2. Move away from the doorway.
______3. Keep calm. Stay away from falling objects.
______4. Conduct earthquake drills especially in school or workplace.
______5. Do not use elevators.
