PROJECT REPORT

PROJECT 1 MAPPING VENETO

THEORETICAL CONTEXT

The main objectives of this project Ire to familiarize ourselves with setting up a coordinate reference
system and navigating the QGIS interface, selecting appropriate mapping symbols for layers, and
creating a data map. My ultimate goal was to produce a detailed map of the province of Belluno in
the Veneto region, highlighting its natural and cultural features.

It was emphasized in earlier sessions that defining my CRS is crucial for providing accurate and
credible location information. To map the three-dimensional surface of the Earth onto a flat, two-
dimensional plane, a coordinate reference system is required. All three methods aim to smooth data
by aligning networks with different coordinate systems, each using a unique mathematical approach
to achieve this goal. These smoothing methods strive to achieve the highest level of precision in
measurements of both length and area. There are various codes for different regions of the world
based on location and the chosen coordinate system. For example, Italy uses the Gauss Boanga
projected coordinate system established in the 1940s. This system uses a unique transversal and
conceptual Mercator approach for measuring height, which differs from the standard approach. Italy
is divided into two parts, the Istern and the eastern parts.

Learning about symbolization in this project was crucial as it helped us make informed decisions
about what to include in the final map design. To ensure the map is easily readable, the symbols used
must be simple, direct, and easy to interpret.

Mapping is an essential tool for displaying data, and without a map, it is difficult to view information.
It is primarily used for data publication and the purpose of a map is to make data more accessible.

GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXT

The province of Belluno, located in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, is the focus of this
research. The province is rich in historical landmarks, such as the ville veneto, which Ire primarily
built during the republic of Venice. In addition to these architectural treasures, the province also
boasts a diverse array of water features, including waterfalls, springs, and designated conservation
areas. Many of these areas are designated as bird breeding sites, while others are set aside to preserve
specific ecosystems.

Belluno is the capital of the province and is situated in the Veneto region of Italy. The province is
vast and is primarily composed of mountainous terrain. The geographic and cultural scope of the
province includes Cadore, Feltrino, Alpago, Val di Zoldo, Agordino, Comelico, and Ampezzano. The
eastern region of the province is home to the famous Dolomite mountains such as Tofane, Marmolada,
Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and Antelao. The province is also blessed with an abundance of water, thanks
to the presence of the Piave River and its tributaries, Boite and Cordevole. Information obtained from

GIS METHODS USED

This section includes:

• In this project, I named it and set the Coordinate Reference System (CRS) to Monte
Mario/Italy zone 1 EPSG 3003 by navigating to the project's attributes, clicking the CRS tab,
and entering 3003 on the filter. I used a variety of data sources and types, including vector
data models comprising of points, vectors, and polygons to represent springs, hydrography,
and area respectively. The layers used included c0104021 Province.shp, c0104031
regione.shp, province belluno.shp, province belluno springd.ship, province belluno
hydro.ship, province belluno ZPS.shp, province belluno.shp and the data repository was the
Moodle platform of CORSO DI LAUREA MAGISTRALE IN LOCAL DEVELOPMENT,
specifically a ZIP folder named mapping veneto.

• In the project, each ZPS had a unique code, name, area, perimeter, class, ZPS type, and an
empty field labeled springs, as documented in the "Notes on the Attribute Tables and Fields"
section. I reclassified all 12 ZPS as NOME ZPS in the attribute database, and changed their
symbology by giving them each a unique color.

• To begin with the GIS techniques, I saved the project under the name mapping Veneto,
configured the correct CRS, and added layers by dragging them from the appropriate
GeoPackage. I examined the attribute table for my layers, learned how to select individual
layers by name and arranged them in alphabetical order. I also changed the colors, sizes, and
forms of the various layers and established best practices for safeguarding specific regions.

• I developed two distinct design concepts, the Belluno frame and the Veneto Region. I used
the manager to create a duplicate of the Belluno layer, studied its structure, and learned how
to modify and update it using a new set of themes with descriptive names.

• Lastly, I generated a Layout designating the Belluno map as the primary one and the Veneto
area as a secondary one. I resized it, added the heading, name, years, north arrow, scale, and
legend. I placed the features where I believed they belonged, adjusted the legend to fit the new
arrangement, and saved the map as a jpeg file for later use.

RESULTS

In Project 1, I utilize two maps to effectively convey the layout of the area under study. The main
focus of the project, the province of Belluno, is showcased in the lower left corner of the image. The
map of the surrounding Veneto region is placed in the upper right corner, providing context and a
larger perspective on the location of Belluno within the region.

The symbols and colors used in the maps serve as visual indicators of the various features present in
the area, such as the city of Veneto, its springs, its hydrography, and its zones of special governmental
interest. These elements are clearly labeled and differentiated through the use of different colors and
symbols, making it easy for readers to understand the information presented.

To further aid in the comprehension of the map, I have included a North arrow, a legend, and a scale
bar with a title. These elements provide readers with a clear understanding of the map's orientation,
the meaning of the symbols used, and the geographic scale of the map, respectively. Overall, the
combination of these elements in the map allows for a clear and informative representation of the
data, making it easy for readers to understand the layout of Project 1.

REFLECTION

In the realm of geographic information systems, the opportunities for exploration and experimentation
are vast. With the various tools and features available in Windows, there are countless ways to
approach a project and achieve the desired outcome. As a practitioner in this field, I am continually
driven to learn and discover the latest innovations and advancements in GIS technology. Whether it's
experimenting with new software or honing my skills on similar assignments, my curiosity and desire

to stay current with the latest tools and techniques never wanes. In my work, I am constantly seeking
out new ways to utilize the tools at my disposal to achieve the best possible results.
