CHAPTER III

Research Methodology

This chapter presents the research design, informants and setting of the study,

instrumentation and validation, and data gathering procedure.

Research Design

This study utilized case study because it tackles about specific problem that a

person encountered especially gay men who experienced discrimination. As cited by

Ridder (2017), “a case study research scientifically investigates into a real-life

phenomenon in-depth and within its environmental context. Such a case can be an

individual, a group, an organization, an event, a problem, or an anomaly.” This research

design helps researchers to deeply understand, analyze, and interpret their research. Case

studies is usually used when researchers are about to conduct a research study with

participants life experiences. Dissecting a case study or sometimes also called case

analysis, expounds the data with an in-depth analysis and interpretation that will be used

for a better and deeper understanding of the topic within the research study.

The case study method was used in this study because the researchers aimed to

investigate and analyze the lived experiences of people who have experienced

discriminations, rejections, and been to a hurtful situation specifically gay men. The

utilization of the case study approach has been very efficient and beneficial not only for

the researchers but are also for the people who will use this conducted research study for

their future researches. It is because case study approach will definitely give a well-

explained information that is supported by a deep interpretation of the study.

This study also utilized the analytical method of research to analyze and

understand the life experiences especially the hindrances conquered by gay men. The

analytical method of research likewise utilized the evaluation of data and collection of

data needed for the study. The researchers use qualitative methods of research such as

individual interview guided by questionnaires to gather relevant information about the

study. The qualitative method primarily aims the narrative and analytical evaluation

about the proposed study to serve as an inspiration to gay men experiencing

discriminations and humiliations.

Informants and Setting of the Study

A total of eight (8) willing disclosed gay men of this study who are purposively and

conveniently selected in consideration of the criteria for selecting the informants and with

the current pandemic protocols and research ethical considerations. They are all from the

brgy. Muzon of San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan.

The participants were chosen based on the following criteria: - (1) (2) (3)

The researchers looked for participants based on their own judgment. The

participant of this study was a disclosed gay man experienced discrimination yet still

managed to live his life as himself. Researchers also ensured that the participant was

willing and openly answered the questions was given to him.

Researcher-made questionnaire serves as the guide of the conducted interview.

The researchers formulated questionnaires for the research study along with the letter of

validation that was given to professionals who are psychology graduates or professionals

who graduates with a degree that is related to psychology. It is essential that there is a

professional psychologist or a psychology graduate that will guide the researchers on

what are the exact questions to be asked to the participant through the interview, which

will not cross any line that will offend the participant.

The professionals who analyzed the interview questionnaire are the following:

Ma’am Maria C. Lauden, EsP Head Teacher; Ma’am Juanita M. De Leon, Guidance

Counselor Designee; Ma’am Ellena G. Garrucho, Master Teacher I; and Sir Marion S.

Arcenas, R.G.C., Guidance Counselor Designee. After the analysis and revisions of the

interview questionnaires, the researcher personally administered the distribution of

questionnaires by means of interviewing the participants about their experiences as

disclose gay men.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers created a letter of approval that was signed by the head researcher

and their research adviser for them to conduct an interview outside the school premises

that will be requested to the School’s Senior High School Coordinator, Alma L. Cruz,

and Engr. Danilo A. Casas, the school’s principal. Requesting for the approval of persons

in authorities to conduct an interview outside the school premises is very important

because the participants of the study must be informed that the conducted interview is

legal and has the approval of high authorities from the school.

Recording the process of interviewing the participants through video or audio

ensured every word that the participants have said was recorded and saved for data

transcriptions. However, writing down notes was still used in this study. Sutton and

Austin, (2015) once stated that “field notes can provide important context to the

interpretation of audio-taped data and can help remind the researcher of situational

factors that may be important during data analysis.” Field notes was being used so that

researchers wrote down important details and key terms that the participants have

answered making the process of transcribing the gathered data done easier. Gathering the

data is one of the essential processes while conducting the research study because it is

where ideas and life experiences of the participants were revealed and will be analyzed

by the researchers.
