PDDC - SEMESTER– IV EXAMINATION – WINTER 2020
Subject Code:2941902 Date:17/02/2021
Subject Name:Dynamics of machinery
Time:02:30 PM TO 04:30 PM Total Marks:56
Instructions:
1. Attempt any FOUR questions out of EIGHT questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.

Q.1 (a) Define (1) Time Period (2) Stiffness of Spring (3) Periodic motion (4) 07
Equivalent Damper in series.
(b) Derive an expression for critical speed of shaft carrying a single rotor and 07
having no damping

Q.2 (a) Discuss in brief frequency measuring instruments. 07

(b) What is swaying couple? Derive an expression for swaying couple 07

Q.3 (a) Explain dynamically equivalent system. 07

(b) The crank-pin circle radius of a horizontal engine is 300 mm. The mass of the 07
reciprocating parts is 250 kg. When the crank has travelled 60° from I.D.C., the
difference between the driving and the back pressures is 0.35 N/mm2 . The
connecting rod length between centres is 1.2 m and the cylinder bore is 0.5 m.
If the engine runs at 250 r.p.m. and if the effect of piston rod diameter is
neglected, calculate : 1. pressure on slide bars, 2. thrust in the connecting rod.

Q.4 (a) Explain the term ‘turning moment diagram’, ’Coefficient of fluctuation of speed and 07
‘’Coefficient of fluctuation of energy’.
(b) The turning moment diagram for a multicylinder engine has been drawn to a scale 1 mm 07
= 600 N-m vertically and 1 mm = 3° horizontally. The intercepted areas between the
output torque curve and the mean resistance line, taken in order from one end, are as
follows :+ 52, – 124, + 92, – 140, + 85, – 72 and + 107 mm2 , when the engine is running
at a speed of 600 r. p.m.If the total fluctuation of speed is not to exceed ± 1.5% of the
mean, find the necessary mass of the flywheel of radius 0.5 m

Q.5 (a) Discuss the effect of the gyroscopic couple on a two wheeled vehicle when taking a turn 07
(b) The mass of the turbine rotor of a ship is 20 tonnes and has a radius of gyration of 0.60 07
m. Its speed is 2000 r.p.m. The ship pitches 6° above and 6° below the horizontal
position. A complete oscillation takes 30 seconds and the motion is simple harmonic.
Determine the following: 1. Maximum gyroscopic couple, 2. Maximum angular
acceleration of the ship during pitching, and 3.The direction in which the bow will tend
to turn when rising, if the rotation of the rotor is clockwise when looking from the rear.

Q.6 (a) Why is balancing of rotating parts necessary for high speed engines? Explain clearly the 07
terms static balancing and dynamic balancing. State the necessary conditions to achieve
them.
(b) A single cylinder reciprocating engine has speed 240 rpm, stroke 300 mm, mass of 07
reciprocating parts 50 kg, mass of revolving parts at 150 mm radius 30 kg. If all the mass
of revolving parts and two-third of the mass of reciprocating parts are to be balanced,
find the balance mass required at radius of 400 mm and the residual unbalanced force
when the crank has rotated 60° from IDC.

1
Q.7 (a) Explain about ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ balancing of reciprocating masses 07
(b) A, B, C and D are four masses carried by a rotating shaft at radii 0.1 m, 0.15 m, 0.15 m 07
and 0.2 m respectively. The planes in which the masses rotate are spaced at 500 mm
apart and the magnitude of the masses B, C and D are 9 kg, 5 kg and 4 kg respectively.
Find the required mass A; and the relative angular settings of the four masses so that the
shaft shall be in complete balance.

Q.8 (a) Determine the natural frequency of oscillation of a cylindrical disc suspended 07
from a point on its circumference.
(b) Describe Dunkerley’s method to find the natural frequency of a shaft carrying several 07
loads
