II FILLING IN THE BLANKS

On your answer sheet, write the letter containing your answer to complete each
statement. Refer to the choices inside the figure.

A. beginning B. outlining C. logical D. paragraph E. systematic F.ideas

6. In outlining, one must create a linear and organized presentation of facts that shows the
main __________ that are discussed as well as their relationships.
7. __________can help someone learn facts in a logical way in such a way that it will be
easy for him to understand what a certain passage wants to notify its readers.

13. ______

What's In
In getting information from long texts, it is best to apply outlining. Outlining can help
you see the relationship of facts. It can help you understand what a certain text wants to tell
its readers.

Aside from learning or understanding a certain passage, outlining can help you relay
information successfully. With the systematized arrangement of facts or ideas you are able
to gather, it will be easy for you to tell others what you think are important.

The succeeding parts of this learning material will help you understand more about
outlining as an essential element in the art of academic and professional communication.

What’s New
This is to introduce or to remind you of a very simple illustration of an outline. Try to
fill in each missing part with something that is appropriate. No answer is considered
incorrect as long as it fits each category.

What is It
An outline is a helpful guide in organizing information. It presents an overview of
one’s work. It shows the order of various topics and the relationship of facts. In other words,
an outline is a general plan of the material that is intended to be shared through written or
oral means.

In addition, an outline is a way for us to demonstrate the main argument (thesis),

main points (topic sentences), and main pieces of evidence we are going to present in a
paper before actually writing it. In doing an outline, we must create a direct, organized
presentation of facts that shows the main ideas that are discussed as well as their
relationships. https://academicanswers.waldenu.edu/faq/72846

Further, an outline should begin with a thesis statement. This thesis sentence
presents the central idea of the paper. It must always be a complete, grammatical
sentence, specific and brief, which expresses the point of view you are taking towards the
subject.
https://www.ndsu.edu/pubweb/~cinichol/271/OutlinesHowTo.htm

In this lesson, you will be directed to the two main types of outlining. There are other
types; however, you can have that later in the higher educational level.
Take a look at this.

TWO MAIN TYPES OF OUTLINES

1. Topic Outline
This is usually brief. Its headings are composed of single words or short phrases. It
shows a quick summary of topics to be included in an essay. Example: a syllabus
from courses with topics listed under each unit.

2. Sentence Outline
As it is named, the headings or contents are written in complete sentences.
Here is a sample of a topic outline, wherein the thesis or main subject is provided.

Thesis: The abuse of alcohol and drugs can affect a person

economically, psychologically and physically (Course Hero. Ben Davis
School. n.d.)

I. Economical effects (Main idea)

A. Alcohol (Sub-idea)
1. Cost of alcohol purchases (Detail of A)
2. Cost
II. Physical of DUIs (Detail of A)
effects
A. Alcohol
B. Drugs
1. Liver(Sub-point)
disease
1.2.Cost of drug
Alcohol purchases (Detail of B)
poisoning
B.2.Drugs
Cost of drug arrest (Detail of B)
II. Psychological
1. Braineffects
damage 5
A. Alcohol
2. Drug overdose
1. Mental impairment
2. Mental addiction
III. Physical Effects

A. Alcohol

2. alcohol poisoning

B. Drugs
1. brain damage
2. drug overdose
2. Mental addiction

Below also is an example of a sentence outline.

Thesis: The abuse of alcohol and drugs can affect a person economically,
psychologically, and physically.

I. Alcohol and drug abuse can affect one economically.

A. The cost of alcohol abuse is high and getting higher.
1. The costs of DUIs can be enormous.
2. Alcohol costs are always rising because of rising production costs
as well as state and local taxes.

B. The cost of drug abuse can be high.

1. Even the arrest for the possession of a minute amount of drugs
can result in high bail and court cost.
2. The cost of drugs fluctuates drastically according to the type of
drug, its availability, and the amount.

II. Alcohol and drug abuse can have severe psychological effects.
A. Alcohol abuse can damage a person psychologically.
1. Alcohol is a depressant and can alter the personality of anyone.
2. The abuse of alcohol can lead to the psychological addiction to
alcohol.
B. Drug abuse can be detrimental to one psychologically.
1. Drugs impair one's ability to function normally because of the
hallucinations or numbness of "getting high."
2. Drugs can become a psychological addiction.

III. Alcohol and drug abuse can affect one physically.

A. Alcohol and drug abuse can cause physical problems.
1. The most common disease among alcoholics is cirrhosis of the
liver.
2. The massive consumption of alcohol can lead to alcohol
poisoning and death.
6
B. Drug abuse has many physical implications
1. Drug abuse has been linked to the damage of brain tissue.
2. The unpredictability of drugs can lead to an overdose and death.

http://www.shsd.org/common/pages/DisplayFile.aspx?itemId=677784

Here are other guidelines in outlining that you should take note of.

1. Place your thesis statement at the beginning.

2. Each heading and subheading must have at least two parts.
3. In a topic outline, do not place periods after the ideas
4. Do not mix up the two kinds of outlines. Use only one kind in one presentation.
5. List the major points that support your thesis. Label them in Roman Numerals (I, II, III,
IV, etc.).
6. List supporting ideas or argument for each major point. Use capital letters like A, B,
C, etc.
7. If applicable, continue to subdivide each supporting idea until your outline is fully
developed. From Roman Numerals (I, II, III…), to capital letters (A, B, C…),
have numbers, then small letters. Further, if there are subdivisions, have numbers
enclosed in parentheses ( (1), (2), (3)…
See this illustration below.

Topic Sentence:
I._______________
A.______________
1.______________
2. _____________
a. _____________
b. _____________
(1)
(2)
B._____________
II._____________
A. _____________
B. _____________

The pattern can be continued based on the information presented in a certain text or
essay. At times, the small letter, like a., b. and so on are not always present.

Excerpt No. 1

HELPING OTHERS: THE PURPOSE OF LIFE

Happiness begins from the moment you do something for others. Those who
consistently help others, are happy, and do not come across any obstacles in their lives.
Research indicates that they are less stressed and experience improved mental health.
The purpose of life is to serve others. However, when doing so, you should not
expect something in return; your intention should be to lessen other people’s
misery. “Service to others should be sincere and done from the heart; only then it is
fruitful.” Do any trees eat their own fruit? No. This teaches us that human beings should
not only use their mind, body and speech for themselves, but also to serve others. When
you do this, nature in turn will reward you.
Your constant inner intent should be towards helping others. If you are unable to
do so for any reason, you can also make sure that you do not hurt anyone. This is an
indirect way to help those around you.

Paragraph 3/Excerpt No.3

Rizal saw the many injustices suffered by his fellow Filipinos: they depended on
the religious corporations or on big landowners, for land to till, or for their living; people
were afraid of airing their grievances or of talking or protesting against the friars or the
government, in short, there was no real freedom of the press or speech.  Most
Filipinos lacked the privilege of education, and its resultant benefits, or if they did have
education, this was the obscurantist kind generally propagated by the colonialist
policy, which not only kept Filipinos in the dark about their rights, but worse, had
molded them into an abject, submissive people ignorant or worse, ashamed of their
own proud heritage, a heritage that existed even before the arrival of the Spaniards.
Finally, Rizal realized that the Philippines had not been consistently represented in the
Spanish parliament.  For Rizal, this was the root of the absence of justice in the
country, or of their being deprived of basic rights.
