What's In
In getting information from long texts, it is best to apply outlining. Outlining can help
you see the relationship of facts. It can help you understand what a certain text wants to tell
its readers.
Aside from learning or understanding a certain passage, outlining can help you relay
information successfully. With the systematized arrangement of facts or ideas you are able
to gather, it will be easy for you to tell others what you think are important.
The succeeding parts of this learning material will help you understand more about
outlining as an essential element in the art of academic and professional communication.
What’s New
This is to introduce or to remind you of a very simple illustration of an outline. Try to
fill in each missing part with something that is appropriate. No answer is considered
incorrect as long as it fits each category.
How To Be Healthy
II. Do exercises
A. Running
B.________
C. Walking
1. brisk walk
2. _________
Further, an outline should begin with a thesis statement. This thesis sentence
presents the central idea of the paper. It must always be a complete, grammatical
sentence, specific and brief, which expresses the point of view you are taking towards the
subject.

In this lesson, you will be directed to the two main types of outlining. There are other
types; however, you can have that later in the higher educational level.
Take a look at this.
1. Topic Outline
This is usually brief. Its headings are composed of single words or short phrases. It
shows a quick summary of topics to be included in an essay. Example: a syllabus
from courses with topics listed under each unit.
2. Sentence Outline
As it is named, the headings or contents are written in complete sentences.
Here is a sample of a topic outline, wherein the thesis or main subject is provided.
A. Alcohol
1. liver disease
2. alcohol poisoning
B. Drugs
1. brain damage
2. drug overdose
2. Mental addiction

II. Alcohol and drug abuse can have severe psychological effects.
A. Alcohol abuse can damage a person psychologically.
1. Alcohol is a depressant and can alter the personality of anyone.
2. The abuse of alcohol can lead to the psychological addiction to
alcohol.
B. Drug abuse can be detrimental to one psychologically.
1. Drugs impair one's ability to function normally because of the
hallucinations or numbness of "getting high."
2. Drugs can become a psychological addiction.

Here are other guidelines in outlining that you should take note of.

A.______________
1.______________
2. _____________
a. _____________
b. _____________
(1)
(2)
B._____________
II._____________

The pattern can be continued based on the information presented in a certain text or
essay. At times, the small letter, like a., b. and so on are not always present.
