ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES

MODULE 4

1. What is the main idea of the paragraph?

- The main idea of the paragraph is, the most prominent races were the immortal
elves, the ambitious men, and the mighty dwarves. They were the ones who were
given rings of power and had vast kingdoms throughout Middle Earth and yet, the
one who would destroy the evil Sauron’s ring of power did not come from the
lands of the elves, men, or dwarves.

2. How were you able to identify the main idea?

- The main idea is often found at the beginning of the paragraph, the first sentence
explains the subject being discussed in the passage and concluding the sentences
of a paragraph.

3. Was the paragraph able to support the main idea? Why or why not?

- I would rather say that the paragraph was able to support the main idea because
the author stated that immortal elves, ambitious men, and the mighty dwarves
were the ones who given rings of power and yet the one who would destroy the evil
Sauron’s ring did not come from the lands of the elves, men, or dwarves.

4. Could you still add something to the main idea to make it more concrete? If so, what
would you add.

- For me I would not rather add something to make it concrete, because it is already
stated by the author what was all about in the novel, but for other people who is
not contented about the novel maybe they can connect to the author and suggest
some more interesting that can catch more attention to the readers.

Activity 1.

1. What is the paper’s thesis statement? It is a strong one? Why do you say so?

- Thesis statement should be more specific, precise, forceful, confident, and is able
to be demonstrated. I read a thesis statement that I read past few years for me it
is quite enough to be a strong thesis that challenged the readers because it is a
statement that shows how they use teaching strategies in order for them to draw
the attention of the students who are not listening in their discussion.

2. How does the rest of the paper support its thesis statement?

- The rest of the paper gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader
of the logic of your interpretation and summarizes the whole thesis statement.
3. How can the paper be improved with regard to its thesis statement and supporting
evidence?

- Make it specific, eliminate vague and generic words and do not discriminate
against people. Make your thesis paper match the to the content because
sometimes a paper’s argument evolves while the paper is being written, but the
writer fails to adjust the thesis statement.

Activity 2.

Plastic waste thrown in large bodies of water is bad for the environment

- Plastic disposal into large bodies o water leads to suffocation and entanglement of
aquatic organisms like fishes, seabirds, turtles, mussels, crustaceans and sea
mammals, while plastic ingestion could be so deadly. Typically, plastics in the
oceans can degrade within a year but not completely. During this plastic
degradation process, toxic chemicals like polystyrene and BPA can be released
into the water causing pollution, waste found in the oceans are made up of
approximately 80% plastics.

Evaluate
A.
1. What is a thesis statement?

- A thesis statement is a main idea of writing assignment and helps control the
ideas within the paper. It is not merely a topic. It often reflects an opinion or
judgement that a writer has made about a reading or personal experience. A good
thesis statement will direct the structure of your essay and will allow your reader
to understand the ideas you will discuss within your paper.

2. Where can the thesis statement usually be found?

- The thesis statement is usually found at the end of an introductory paragraph. Its
planted early in the essay because it informs the reader of the main important
idea that encompasses the entire essay. The sentence will introduce it, and the
sentences that follow will support and explain it.

3. What should the rest of your paper do for your thesis statement?

- All paragraphs of the essay should explain, support, or argue with your thesis, A
strong thesis statement requires proof, it is not merely a statement of fact. You
should support your thesis statement with detailed supporting evidence will
interest your readers and motivate them to continue reading the paper.

4. What should be your first step in writing a thesis statement?

- Start with a question, you should come up with an initial thesis, sometimes called
a working thesis, early in the writing process. As soon as you’ve decided on your
essay topic, you need to work out what you want to say about it a clear thesis will
give your essay direction and structure.
5. How would you know if you should develop a thesis statement for your
assignment?

- Ask your instructor if the assignment requires a thesis statement. When an

assignment asks you to analyze, to interpret, to compare and contrast, to
demonstrate cause and effect, or to take a stand on an issue, it is likely that you
are being asked to develop a thesis and to support it persuasively.

B.

1. Why is academic writing persuasive in nature?

- Academic writing involves the communication of numerous key ideas in one piece
of research. So, doing it all together is vital to achieving persuasive argument.
There is little point in engaging your readers if they cannot follow the big picture,
they will quickly lose attention and interest.

2. What can you do to strengthen your thesis statement?

- A strong thesis statement has a clear, specific point of view, to make it more
strengthen it must be debatable that can catch the attention of the reader to
oppose or dispute your position, and offers some evidence to support your
opinion.

3. Why is research necessary before developing a working thesis?

- A working thesis is a tentative statement that you make about your topic early in
the writing process, for the purpose of directing your thinking early. This thesis is
likely to change somewhat or to be abandoned altogether as you move through the
writing process, so it is best not to become too enamored of it.

4. It is possible for your thesis statement to change while in the process of writing? Why
or why not?

- If your thesis and the body of your essay do not seem to go together, one of them
has to change. It's okay to change your working thesis to reflect things you have
figured out in the course of writing your paper. Remember, always reassess and
revise your writing as necessary.

5. How can you evaluate if your thesis statement is disputable or if it is merely stating
facts?

- Look for an argument against your thesis, A thesis statement must always have
potential argument or different point of view. If does not, the thesis statement is
not appropriate because it is more a summary than a point.
