Task 1: The table below shows how young people in Tokyo, Japan,

listened to music over the previous month. The pie chart shows a
record company’s international findings about whether people
preferred live or recorded music.

The table shows the proportions of young Japanese males and females who
listened to music on MP3 players, online, on CDs and at concerts over the
previous month. The pie chart indicating whether they preferred live or
recorded music.

It is clear from the pie chart that the vast majority of both sexes were keener
on live music than recorded music. To specify, live music fans account for 70%,
whereas only 26% of surveyed people said they were in favour of recorded
music.

As can be seen from the table, the proportions of males choosing live music,
MP3 players and the Internet outweighed those of females. The figures for
males were all over 50 percent, with the highest on (79%) belonging to MP3
players. Whereas, the percentages for females were all less than 50%, with the
highest one (44%) belonging to live music.

By contrast, both male and female listeners included roughly proportion from
CDs: 19% and 22%, respectively.

Task 2: Travellers and business people often come into contact with
other cultures briefly. What are the main advantages and disvantages
of doing so?

It is widely accepted that we were at the time when international relations are
most. People make contact with other cultrures, both during travel and as a
part of their work.

One of the most important advantages of this is that it enhances international

understanding of people. For instance, the communication with local people is
a good chance to explore some similarities in their culture. This issue will
resolve some cultural differences among nations that have been a main reason
of distances for many years. There are also some advantages for business
people. During this short vistit, if business people can understand the culture
of that country, they will be more succesfull with the products they produce
for that place. A good illustration of this is a McDonald’s that has many
branches all over the world. They produce different products according to each
country’s traditional food. This is one of the reasons they are preferred by
people.
On the other hand, the main drawbacks is that this experience with
other cultures might be superficial and it gives to people some mistaken ideas.
For example, they can make generalizations about what they have experienced
that are not true. Unlike this, to get the right ideas about other cultures
requires long time experiences and good communications with local people.
To conclude, relations with other countries have some benefits about
our personal improvement and for working developers. However , we should
have conscious to have the right knowledge about another culture is not based
on one or two limited contacts. Long-term experiences are necessery to be
build up a good awareness.
