UNIT 4
CONTEXUAL RESEARCH FOR CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION

1
1.1

Identify the contextual research you have been required to carry out for the following projects?
This might include use of images, use of typography, use of sound, existing examples of media products
and roles within the industry itself.

Horror Film Poster (if you started the course in September)

I had to research different types of existing horror posters. This was to see
occurring themes I could use like colour schemes which was mainly black.

Lost Short Film

I had to do research on different shot types and what they are used for. For
example, a long or short shoot.

Blair Witch Trailer Project-

I did research on other horror trailers. I took notes on everything that was
relevant. Like the sound effects and music, they used to add shock value or
creepy vibes.

2.1

How did you use contextual knowledge in one of the following projects;
EG Colours, images and typography in the Horror Film Poster Project?
EG Sound, locations, shot types, props and editing techniques in the Lost Short Film Project?
EG Replicating (and updating) existing footage for the Blair Witch Trailer Project

Horror Film Poster – https://calebbysouthlevel2year1media.weebly.com/

In the horror film project I used mainly a black colour scheme which is quite
fitting for the genre.

Lost Short Film – https://youtu.be/SIreSallXIw

I used a variety of sounds in the lost short film including foley. For the
location I choose a hallway for him to get lost in .it was mainly long shots so
it lacks detail and looks similar which helps with the whole lost ecstatic

Well, I updated the footage using my contextual knowledge. I realised that
the tech needed to be updated and some of the locations to better fit the
modern look.

2.2

Identify examples within your own work of where your research and application of contextual
knowledge was successful?

My research on the websites helped me realise what to do and not to do. This was the same for my
horror trailer research. It showed me what is expected and the norm of a horror trailer.

What do you feel you have learned from this process that you could carry forward for future projects?

I know how to correct my mistakes I’ve made and not to give up. Also how doing research is actually
beneficial and will improve the work that I do. As well I’ve learned a lot of useful camera skills that im
sure will help me in the future.
