Q1: State the function of engine cowls?

to cover and protect Engine compartment area from FOD and Keep the designed
aerodynamic contours of the aircraft. Also, Cowling is utilized to protect and provide easy
access to engine, reduction (combining) gearbox air intake and exhaust ejectors.

Q2: State accessories installed on the main accessory gear box?

1. Gas Producer Tachometer Generator N1

2. Power Turbine Tachometer Generator N2
3. Starter Generator
4. Oil Pumps
5. Torque Pressure Transmitter
6. Power Section Oil Pressure Switch
7. Power Section Oil Pressure Transmitter
8. Power Section Oil Temperature Bulb

Q3: Which Engine component make the” Engine Oil Pressure” Caution Segment
illuminate?

Engine Oil Pressure Switch

Q4: What is the function of Engine Fire wall?

The firewalls assemblies are provided to isolate the power sections, combining gearbox
areas in case of fire in the engine compartment

Q5: State the main materials used in G.T.E. compartment and mention one use
for each?

 Engine nacelle is made of composite material (resistance of high speed friction, thermal
resistance and light weight)
 Engine Fire wall is made of Titanium alloy (high thermal resistance and light weight)
 Engine cowling is made of Aluminum alloy ( light weight)

1
Q6: Mention which component will measure the following?

a- Engine Oil Temperature

Engine Oil Temperature Bulb

b- Engine Oil Pressure.

Engine Oil Pressure Transmitter

c- Engine Compressor RPM (N1)

N1 Tachometer

Q7: Explain the Maintenance action followed to removal of an engine from A/C
for overhaul or restoration?

Preservation of the engine: If the engine is stored and will not be used for a long time,
preservation procedures must be made. The preservation type is specified according to the
storing time. Replacing Engine Gear box oil and FCU fuel with certain preserved oil type
(un-corrosive oil) as specified in engine maintenance manual and all the openings in the
engine (intake, exhaust or fan exhaust) must be closed and a dehumidifier (such as silica
gel) is put inside the engine in order to reduce humidity. And for long storing period (more
than 90 days), also all fuel paths must be evacuated from fuel and filled with certain
preserved oil.

Q8: Cowls are used for?

c) Both (a) & (b)

Q9: Describe the Engine Nacelle?

is a casing; separate from the fuselage that houses an Aircraft engine, providing efficient
aerodynamics during flight (it is one of the first aero-structures to exploit the use of
composite material).

Q10: Define:

a) Chafing and Galling

b) Power Plant and Engine Compartment

2
Chafing:

It’s light rubbing without the transfer of metal from surface to another surface that is in
contact. In other words, chafing is slight contact between 2 surfaces.

Galling:

Its severe rubbing that leads to metal transfer from one surface to another surface that is in
contact. As an example, sever rubbing to a degree that in the case of ceasing. The blade tip
eats in the inner surface of the case.

Power Plant:

The power plant is the overall power components and any other components that are
integrated with power plant to make engine functions properly.

Engine Compartment:

is the zone between the engine case and the engine cowling (made by A/C MFR) and it
includes:

Q11: How are most aircraft turbine engine fire-extinguishing systems activated?

a) Electrically discharged cartridge.

Q12: What is the main Function of Engine mounts? And when will Engine
Alignment be required?

The engine mounts attach engine to the A/C structure to keep the engine smoothly
introduce the output power in the required design direction. An Engine Alignment check
is required whenever:

 Replacement of the Engine

 Replacement of any adjustable mount parts

Q13: Give Example for the following?

- Monitoring Components

Displays, indicators and caution segments

3
- Warning Components

The switches and detectors

- Measuring Components

The tachometer, the transmitter and the bulb

Q14: Which of the Engine Oil System Component provides Engine Oil
Temperature Reading?

Power Section Oil Temperature Bulb

Q15: In Which Manufacture Technical Publication and ATA Chapter can find
Engine Removal and installation approved instructions?

Aircraft Maintenance Manual, ATA Chapter 71

Q16: Identify No. 2.5 Engine Station and No. 4 Engine Station?

No. 2.5 Engine Station:

station between low pressure compressor and high-pressure compressor.

No. 4 Engine Station

Station at the turbine intake, and the exit of combustion chamber.

Q17: What are the main visual inspection checks for Aircraft Engine which
carried out immediately before or after flight?

1- FOD (foreign object debris) on fan blades

2- Inlet cone

3- Nose cowl

4- Ensure that the cowl latches are closed

5- Engine Oil Level

4
6- See if there is any oil accumulated under the engine on ground and in the engine
case. If there is oil that is wetting the blades, then this is an indication for a big problem in
the corresponding bearing.

Q18: Describe the difference between Engine Preservation and Engine De-
preservation processes?

Preservation of the engine De-preservation of the engine

Preservation of the engine: If the engine is Before reusing the engine once more after been
stored and will not be used for a long time, preserved, the following steps must be done:
preservation procedures must be made. The 1-Removing the cover from all openings.

storing time. Replacing Engine Gear box oil 3-Removing oil from the fuel paths and filling
and FCU fuel with certain preserved oil type them with fuel (replacing oil with fuel).
