FOREWORD

THE EVOLVED MAN is a fictional story. Growing up, I have always had a
passion for science fiction with lot of imaginations of my own. This book is a
written with the intention of bringing out my imaginary characters. It’s about a
young Cameroonian called Ronan Penn who lived a mediocre life but after being
in an accident, he wakes up a brand new man with a different prospective of life

CHAPTER ONE

TIME is a factor that cannot be recovered, a second lost can never be gained, this
is the natural process of life but what if we could shove all what we know and look
at the possibilities and applications if we could go back a second, a minute an hour
or even a year and make changes to life. Lots of people would be thrilled with this
remarkable discovery but unfortunately for us, as of now it is practically
impossible.
These were the thoughts of Ronan as he laid on his bed thinking how cruel
life is, wondering of the possibilities of ever seeing his dead father again, a few
months had passed since he lost his father Paul, but the memory was still very
vivid in his mind, it vexed him knowing there was nothing he could do to bring
back or see his dad ever again, all he could do was cherish the memories they had
together. He found it very difficult to sleep. Grace noticed they lights were still on
in his sons room, she rushed to his room.
‘Ronan why are you not sleeping?’ asked his mother.
‘I can’t stop thinking about dad, it really saddens me.’ Ronan replied.
‘My son, your father’s death is really tough on us all, I know you feel like a
sheep without a shepherd but I promise you to do my best.’
‘Thank you for your kind words.’ His mother smiles.
‘Go to sleep my son, you have school in the morning, you wouldn’t want to
have a bad day tomorrow.
‘Good night mummy, I will try and sleep now’.
‘Good night my son, sleep tight.’
Grace goes back to her room, says a prayer and calls it a night.
Early the next morning, Ronan and his two siblings Ariel and Karen did their
morning chores and headed for school, Ronan attends Government bilingual high

school Mankon while his siblings Government bilingual high school Bamenda. It
was reopening day after a long summer vacation and Ronan wore his best uniform,
it was an opportunity to make new acquaintances and to catch up with old friends.
They couldn’t stop talking on how their summer was but Ronan still seem
saddened about the death of his father, his friends noticed and tried to cheer him up
but to no avail. Suddenly a really beautiful girl walked in, she was fair in
complexion, with an hour glass shape, they all couldn’t stop starring and she
looked so elegant and composed.
‘Who could she be?’ Ronan asked.
‘It seems she’s a new student.’ Samuel replied, one of Ronan’s friends.
‘Ronan go over and talk to her.’ Tebo suggested.
‘I’ll do just that.’ Ronan replied.
Ronan immediately moves towards this damsel, he was never a master in
the art of communicating with members of the opposite sex but the beauty of this
girl captivated him, with no plan on what he was going to say, he decided to wing
it.
‘Hello, I must say you are very beautiful.’ She giggles.
‘I’m called Ronan but most of my friends call me Ron.’
‘I’m called Kayla and thanks for the compliment, you aren’t looking bad
yourself.’ She replied
Up to that moment nothing had really made him laughed but the way Kayla
talked to him with a charming voice made Ronan smile, his friends still starring
from afar noticed the glow on his face, they were happy he could smile again.
Ronan and Kayla kept on talking as if they had known each other for ages; his
friends couldn’t stop wondering what they were talking about. Kayla told Ronan
how she and how family had to move from Limbe to Bamenda because of her
father’s job.

‘I feel blessed meeting you, I feel like you moving to my school was a
blessing that just unrivalled.’ Kayla blushes.
‘It feels good meeting someone as sweet and welcoming as you.’ Kayla
replied
‘Would you mind meeting my friends?’
‘No, I would love to.’ She replied
Ronan took a bold step, grabs her by her hand and moves toward his friends,
he introduced Kayla to his friends, they were all happy to make her acquaintance,
they all did their best to make her feel welcomed, few minutes later the biology
teacher walks in to begin the first lesson of the day. Ronan offers Kayla a place
next to him, though Biology was one of Ronan’s favorite subjects, he couldn’t stop
starring at Kayla with a smile on his face. During break, Ronan gave Kayla a tour
of the Campus, she was amazed by how vast the school was with lots of
classrooms and school farms, though their laboratories were not the best but it
could do the job just fine. At the end the day they exchanged phone numbers and
said goodbye to each other.

CHAPTER 2
Karen and Ariel were having an argument about who was going to prepare food,
Ariel knows fully well that it was her turn to cook but being the Benjamin in the
family, she always expected special treatment as if she was royalty but Karen
didn’t liked her attitude at all, she kept on insisting Ariel should prepare lunch.
Grace over hears the argument from the other room and immediately moves to the
scene.
‘Girls what’s all the bickering for?’ Their mother asked.
‘It’s Ariel’s turn to prepare lunch but she doesn’t want to do it.’ Karen
replied.
‘Ariel we all know it’s your turn to prepare lunch, stop this bickering and
prepare lunch right away!’ Grace exclaimed
‘OK mom.’ Ariel replied
Few seconds later Ronan arrived home, his mom and siblings welcomed him,
they all noticed the glow on his face, it made them wonder what could have
happened in school to make him this happy but they were all glad to see him happy
because their father’s death was really hard on him since his father was like his
best friend and they were really close.
Later on lunch was ready and Ariel served all of them, Ronan always didn’t eat
much food since their dad passed, but on this faithful day Ronan ate more than
usual, they were all surprised though still excited he was eating again . After lunch
Karen clears the table and Ronan thanks Ariel for lunch, retires to his room and
start texting Kayla, normally Ronan always watches a movie after a meal. Ronan
sends Kayla a text asking her if she got home safe but he didn’t get any reply, so he
decided to call to find out what was happening, Kayla picked up the call and told
him she got home safely but unfortunately she wasn’t next to her phone when the
text came in, Ronan was just glad she was ok, the sound of her beautiful voice was

like a melody to him. Karen couldn’t help over hear the conversation, she noticed
that Ronan was talking with a lady on phone but she couldn’t make heads or tail of
what the conversation was all about, Karen swiftly gets to Ronan’s room.
‘Ronan we all noticed a glow on your face when you walked in today.
What’s making you glow as bright as the moon?’ Karen asked.
‘I don’t know how to say this but I met a girl today, her name is Kayla,
and she is the most enchanting lady I have ever met.’ Ronan replied
‘Karen smiles, wow I really need to meet her, I’m really glad you can
smile again.’
‘I know I just met her but I have a feeling she’s my missing rib.’ Karen
giggles.
‘Does she know how you feel about her?’ Karen asked
‘We just met so I think it’s too early for that but I’ll let her know how I
feel in due course.’ Ronan replied.
‘Oh well I wish you the best.’
Ronan and Karen talked a little more on the subject and Ronan thanks
Karen for the sensitive information given to him on how to tackle the situation.
Hours passed like the wind, Ronan wakes up to a brand new day in a
brighter mood than ever before, he couldn’t wait to see Kayla again, he hurriedly
prepares for school, few minutes after he arrived school, they was Kayla
majestically walking into class and sat next to Ronan, they said their good
morning, attended lessons, and became more acquainted with each other.
Ronan was an average student but he had to study hard so as to pass his
exams and also to impress Kayla, they even formed study groups and Ronan had
made sure Kayla was his study partner. Several weeks had passed and Ronan
couldn’t keep his feelings to himself any more, it was time to drop the bomb.

On one faithful afternoon after school, Ronan and Kayla were heading home
and Kayla noticed how tensed he was.
‘Ronan you seem troubled, are you ok?’ Kayla asked.
‘I have never been better; the truth is these past few weeks I’ve spent with
you have been one of the best weeks of my life. You are the most enchanting lady I
have ever met. Each time I think of you I have goose bumps, from the day I met
you my life has been filled with happiness, you took away the sadness from my
heart and replaced it with love, am not a poet but when I think about you I am
overwhelmed by your charisma, my heart skips a beat when I hear your voice and
you would make me the happiest guy by being my girlfriend.’
Ronan’s sweet, loving and caring words made Kayla smile; she too was
overwhelmed because she never knew he felt this way about her, she had been
harboring feelings for Ronan as well. Kayla didn’t know how to react, she just
found herself giving Ronan a peg on the cheek.
‘Yes I’ll be your girlfriend if you promise to love and cherish me always.’
‘Ronan smiles, certainly I will.’ Ronan kisses her.
Thrilled with joy Ronan decides to pass by Kayla’s house before heading home.
Ronan couldn’t wait to tell Karen that he finally asked Kayla out and she accepted.
He finally arrives home looking all glittered up than ever but unfortunately Karen
wasn’t yet home, he waited anxiously for her return and around 4pm Karen finally
returns home.
‘Hey sis, welcome home, I was worried, what took you so long?’
‘We had extra classes toady.’ Karen replied.
‘Guess what happened today.’
‘Ronan you know am not good at guessing besides am very tired, had a
hectic day at school, please just go straight to the point.’ Karen answered.
‘I asked Kayla to be my girlfriend today and she accepted, am so happy.’

‘Wow, that’s exciting news. I’m so happy for you!’ Karen exclaimed.
Ronan thanks Karen for her sensitive strategy because it worked like a
charm, better than he had ever hoped for.
The next day at school Ronan told his friends about Kayla now being his
girlfriend, they were all amazed how swiftly Kayla had fallen for him but they
were all happy for him. Ronan brought fresh flowers he picked from home , wrote
a romantic note and kept on the flower and the note in Kayla’s locker , it was the
first thing Kayla noticed when she looked in her locker, she read the note picked
up the flower and couldn’t stop smiling, coincidentally she had a romantic note for
him too, she went straight to him, hugged him , thanked him for the sweet words
and the flower and slipped the note she had prepared for him into his pocket and
goes back to her sit, Ronan noticed that Kayla had slipped something into his
pocket, he immediately checked his pocket and found the note, he was glowing
with while reading it and he couldn’t stop thanking her for the remarkable words.
Several months had passed; Ronan and Kayla’s love only grew stronger,
though high school was tough but they always did their best to make it work. At
this point in time Ronan thought it was a good idea for Karen and Kayla to finally
meet. Meeting at least one member of the family felt like a good way to show
Kayla how serious he was and to make it less awkward when he finally decides to
introduce Kayla to his mom.
‘Kayla I have told my sister a lot about you and she would love to meet
you.’
‘Good things I hope.’ Kayla replied with a smile
‘Certainly’ Ronan Answered.
‘Wow, I would love to meet her too’ Kayla Replied.
Over the weekend, Ronan invited Kayla over to their house, he informed
Karen that Kayla would be coming over, Karen was excited to meet her and luckily

it was her turn to cook. Karen prepared ndole and ripe plantains to welcome their
guest, it was one of Ronan’s favorite meals and Karen hoped that Kayla would like
it.
Later that day the doorbell rings and Ronan opened the door and boom, Kayla
was at the door, he swiftly hugs her, ushered her in, and gave her a sit.
‘Hope it wasn’t difficult tracing my abode?’
‘It was just the way you described, I didn’t find it hard.’ Kayla replied.
Ronan was thrilled to hear that, and he informed Karen that their guest had
arrived. Karen was still in the kitchen cooking but she came to welcome Kayla.
‘Karen this is Kayla the girl I have been telling you about.’
‘Nice meeting you, Ronan has told me a lot of beautiful things about you.’
Karen replied.
‘Nice meeting you too, I have heard a lot of charming things about you as
well.’ Kayla replied.
‘You are just as beautiful as Ronan described.’ Kayla blushed
‘Awwww, thanks for the compliment.’ Kayla replied.
‘Well, make yourself comfortable while I round up in the kitchen
‘Ronan, where is your mother?’ Kayla Asked.
‘My mom and my sister Ariel have gone shopping.’ Ronan replied.
Few minutes later, Karen was done with the meal. She served them, they all
ate and complimented her for a wonderful meal; they talked more and became
more acquainted with each other. It was getting late and Kayla had to go home,
Ronan decided to go see her off.
‘Thank you for having me over, I really had a good time.’
‘Am just glad you could make it.’ Ronan replied.

CHAPTER 3
It was almost the end of the first year of high school and closing day was
fast approaching, Ronan kept anticipating how his results were going to look like
though he did his best on all his exams but he felt his best wasn’t enough. Finally it
was closing day; Ronan was going to finally see how he performed but
unfortunately for him, the school printer had a technical issue and as a result their
report cards could only be printed the next day after repairs will have been done.
Mr. John Sanjo who was the principal of the school informed the students to come
back the next day for their results. This information made Ronan really furious but
there was nothing he could do but adhere to it.
The next day, as early as 7am Ronan was already in school waiting anxiously
for his report card and hoped they had been printed. At about 10 am an assembly
was held, the principal gave a short speech, called out the best two students in the
whole school and we all cheered them. After the assembly we all retired to our
various classes for the sharing of the report cards. Finally the report cards were
shared.
‘Ronan, how were your results.’ Kayla asked.
‘My performance wasn’t as good as I expected. What about yours?’ Ronan
replied.
‘I think I did great, lets exchange report cards.’ Kayla suggested.
They both exchanged report cards and Kayla discovers that Ronan did
performed better than she did but he wasn’t satisfied with the outcome because
both of didn’t make first 10 in a class of 53 students. Ronan was ranked as the 18 th
best student in class while Kayla was the 23th but she was more contented with her
results and tried to cheer Ronan up by assuring him they will do better next time
but this didn’t make Ronan feel any better.
On their way back home something mysterious and terrible happened
