Introduction
● The Internet is evolving to become the de-facto cyberspace or virtual environment
facilitating communication, business, and entertainment on a global scale

● The Internet we are familiar with is filled with web pages, images and graphics that have a
2D existence

● Time has come to upgrade the Internet itself to a much sophisticated, interactive and
ubiquitous network

● 3D Internet is poised to replace the 2D Internet

3
3D Internet
● 3D Internet is a combination of Internet and 3D graphics

● Result of such an integration would be interactive and real time 3D graphics all
delivered through the web

● 3D Internet includes interconnected services, displayed as virtual worlds

● 3D Internet is a visual area where the user can experience real-world scenarios

● 3D Internet is highly interactive and engaging

● Powerful new way for users to reach consumers, business customers, partners, students
and colleagues

4
Why do we need 3D Internet?
● The evils of the current Internet can be given the following:

❑ Time wasted due to mouse movement

❑ Non-interactive web pages

❑ Slow speed of working

❑ Failure representation of certain images and 3D graphics

● So the current technology is less efficient and needs to be replaced

● Solution to these problems can be installed on 3D Internet

Evolution of 3D Internet

Web Web Web

1.0 2.0 3.0

7
Web 1.0

• First model of Internet

• People could only read content online provided by a small number of

developers

• Users couldn't upload or provide their content to other peers at this stage

• This can be simply termed as “read only” form of Internet

8
Web 2.0

• Everyone can contribute to the web

• Rich user interface and built in class graphics

• This can be simply termed as “read-write” form of Internet

9
Web 3.0

• Raw data is processed and converted to information by the Internet itself

• Data can be integrated and applied in innovative ways that were never possible
before

• Gave birth to the most-awaited future internet

• This can be simply termed as “read-write-execute” form of Internet

10
Architecture of 3D Internet

11
World servers
● Provide user or server-side created, static and dynamic content making up the specific
web place (3D environment)

● Includes visuals, physics engine, avatar data, media and more to client programs

● Coordinates the co-existence of connected users, initiating communication between them,

and ensuring in-world consistency in real time.

● Facilitate various services such as e-mail, instant sagging, and more

12
ID /Avatar server
● Virtual identity management systems containing identity and avatar information as well as
inventory of registered users

● Provides the information to individual world servers and relevant client programs

● Ensures necessary privacy and security of stored information

● Part of world servers

13
Universe location servers
● Virtual location management systems which are somewhat similar to the current DNS

● Provides virtual geographical information as well as meta information to connect to the

Internet

● Act like a distributed directory of the avatar servers, world, and users

Clients
● Browser like viewer program running on user’s computers

● Extensive networking, caching, and 3D rendering capabilities.

14
Methods of Implementation
• Software Approach

❑ Depth Perception and Artificial Intelligence

❑ WebGL

• Hardware Approach

• Using VRML technology

15
Software Approach
Depth Perception and Artificial Intelligence
● Depth perception allows for conversion of 2D images into 3D

● It can understand the difference between two colors, depth of two objects with the help of
sensors

● Capable enough to understand if a still image is being displayed, if the objects in it are
near the observer or away from it

● Artificial intelligence will be required for the latter implementation

● It will decide the extent to which the users on the client side experience the 3D effect

16
WebGL (Web graphics library)

● It is a JavaScript library for displaying interactive 2D and 3D content on compatible

web browsers without the use of any plugins

● Capable of transforming static visual variables of shape, texture, size, color,

orientations, value and overall presentation of information into a 3D virtual space

● Provides a mind-blowing experience and function as a great data visualization tool

17
Hardware Approach
● Anaglyph Glasses
It consists of glasses of chromatically opposite colors like a combination of cyan and red.
When used as a pair of glasses with different colors on either side they send two separate
images to the viewer to create a stereoscopic image

18
● Polarized Glasses
3D visuals are achieved by projecting two images simultaneously, one horizontally and
other vertically polarized which causes a 3D effect.

19
● Shutter Glasses
Stereoscopic image can also be created by blocking the view of one eye at a time and
repeating this at very fast rates.

20
VRML Technology

● VRML is the Virtual Reality Modelling Language, a system for describing 3D scenes on the Web

● It allows a browser to produce the illusion of a three dimensional environment

● First thing we need is a VRML browser, to view our worlds, as well as other peoples
e.g.: Cosmo Player

● Next we have to create our own worlds. There are two ways of doing it :

❑ we could use one of the many VRML authoring tools

❑ the other way is to code it by hand

21
File structure of VRML technology

VRML files contain:

• File header

• Comments - notes to ourself

• Nodes - nuggets of scene information

• Fields - node attributes that we can change

• Values - attribute values

22
Simple code in VRML technology

23
Technical Implications
Internet Speed
● It is in terms of limitation of bandwidth and access to a stable connection
● Not many countries in the world are in a state to fulfill the required internet speeds

Hardware
● Display devices are usually 2D in nature
● Requires to move from the traditional screens to the ones that are compatible

Cost
● Cost involved in the overall implementation of 3D Internet is high
24
Solutions
Internet speed
● Average broadband Internet speed can be achieved by using Google Fiber

● Provides a lightning speed of 1 gigabit per second which is about 100 times faster than
the current speeds

Hardware
● Use of Vision Station as a monitor / display for the 3D Internet

● Provides a 180 degrees ultra wide view of 3D visual world

● Gives terrific 3D experience over the Internet at a cost much lower

25
Applications
Education
● People will have a better understanding of the subject
● Can view lectures and experiments in a 3D environment

Real Estate
● Customers can view the property beforehand online with a stereoscopic view
● They would get a basic idea and feel of the area and locality
● Cut down on traveling and ease the selection process of properties to a great extent

Tourism
● Tourists can have a 3D sample view of the desired locations
● The demo of the place they are about to visit can decide if it’s worth investing on the trip
26
Social Interaction
● Video calls can be more interactive and appealing
● 3D chat spaces can be introduced to social media with interactive emojis
● People who are unable to meet on a regular base can interact online

Entertainment
● Online live 3D games, 3D movies etc. can be achieved using 3D internet.
● Gamers can enjoy live 3D online games at home and can easily connect with their friends

E-commerce
● Online Shopping would be more realistic and reliable
● Users can view catalogue and visit virtual malls from Internet
● Vicarious feeling of shopping can be fulfilled by consumers by sitting at home

27
Advantages
• More Interactive (Comfort level is more)
• Facilitates an open communication, leading to enhanced information discovery and
delivery
• Reduced mouse movements
• Provides an opportunity to widen business contacts
• Simple yet effective representation (3D Images)
• Increased speed of working
• Replicates real life
• Participants experience virtual world
• Participant has control over entire virtual space
• Better understanding of concepts
28
Disadvantages
• Requires high-speed internet
• Hardware requirements are partially available
• Highly expensive, difficult modelling
• Opens up the possibility for hackers to launch spam and virus attacks and commit fraud

29
Obstacles to Commercial Success

● Limited effectiveness of traditional media techniques

● Lack of effective way for enabling people to virtual worlds

● Inconsistent means of enabling in-world participants

30
Conclusion
● 3D Internet is the future as it will surely change the way we see the Internet today

● Benefits and applications surpass the cost associated with implementation

● The need of an intelligent and ubiquitous Internet for enthusiastic users can be fulfilled by

3D Internet

● Currently the society has power to transform digital world to a much more versatile and

intriguing version but it needs a lot of research and funding to make it a reality

● To make 3D Internet a reality it is important to start multidisciplinary research
