“Auto is a types of transformer that contains
only single winding which is used as primary
and secondary winding”.
 TYPES AUTO TRANSFORMER
There are two types of Auto Transformer such as:
A) Step-Up auto transformer
B) Step-Down auto transformer
 STEP-UP AUTO TRANSFORMER
In step-up auto transformer the number of turns in secondary
winding is greater than primary winding.
Step-up auto transformer is used to increase secondary voltage.

N2 refers to secondary winding
 STEP-DOWN AUTO TRANSFORMER
In step-up auto transformer the number of turns in secondary
winding is less than primary winding.
Step-down auto transformer is used to decrease secondary
voltage.

ADVANTAGES OF AUTOTRAMSFORMER
Advantages of Auto Transformer are:
Auto transformer has less copper cu than two winding
transformer.
Auto transformer has better regulation as compared to two
winding transformer.
Auto transformer has smaller in size.
An autotransformer has advantages only for relatively low
values of transformation ratio.
DISADVANTAGES OF AUTOTRAMSFORMER
Disadvantages of Auto Transformer are:
Auto transformer is not safe for stepping high voltage into low
voltage.
In auto transformer there is a direct connection between primary
and secondary winding.
Auto transformer has high short circuit current.
 APPLICATIONS OF AUTOTRAMSFORMER
Applications of Auto Transformer are:
Auto transformer is also known as booster transformer because
it compensate the voltage drops in transmission lines.
Auto transformer can be used as continuously variable power
supply.
Auto transformer is used as reduced voltage starter for induction
motor.
