Total Zero: An Action Against Surface Water Contamination

Problem of the Study:

(Title)

- Nowadays, the availability of clean water had been scarce, primarily due to the presence of
pollution – such as plastics, dirt, and other harmful substances, in our surface waters. With that
in mind, this issue had been very concerning, considering the future it holds for the society once
it progresses into a much bigger problem.
- Fact: Approximately 2.2 million metric tons of water pollution that occur in the Philippines each
year.

Goals/Objectives:

- This plan aims to provide an action to the current issue will be focusing in. By creating a low-cost
water filter based on existing studies and projects about it, us, students as environmental
planners want to increase the availability of clean water resources that can be utilized for
domestic uses.

Strategies/Action Steps:

- To execute the plan “(Title)”, we, the students plan to:

 Create an encouragement post/content to convince fellow students to collect plastics,
specifically plastic bottles, found scattered within their surroundings and nearby water bodies.
The said material will be recycled to be used as the main material for the said water filter.
 This collection will proceed until we reached the certain number of water filter needed which is
at maximum 15 water filters. If this plan proves to be successful and effective, we plan to
increase the number of water filters. Other materials to be acquired include unclean water,
sand, gravel, cloth, activated filter carbon, water purification drops/tablet, and containers for
the dirty and filtered water.
 After collecting the said materials, we will now proceed in creating the alternative water filter.

 Once completed, we will test the purifier repeatedly until we obtain a clear and clean water that
can now be utilized ONLY for domestic purposes. Since it did not undergo a proper lab testing,
we aren’t 100% sure that all the particles and substance present in the water were cleared.

Benefits:

Once the goal is accomplished, even at the simplest way, this would help in lessening the contamination
present in surface waters which could increase the availability of water resources for domestic use.
Moreover, at the very least, this plan would help in igniting ideas for future purposes and encourage
people to be mindful of their waste and to value our water resources more.

This study/plan would be helpful for science and environmental sectors given the nature of the study.

Evaluation:
To know whether this action is successful, we plan to fill at least 3 pitchers with clean water for every 3-
5 water filters.

We also plan to observe the amount of the filtered dirt or substances from the water filter to know
whether how effective the product is. Moreover, we would test and observe some of the physical
properties of the filtered water itself in terms of: pH, color, odor, turbidity, and so on.
