1- The topic that all the cartoons have in common is the migration, but each one represents
a different motive or way to migrate.

4. In my opinion the most touching one is the C, because it shows the different mindsets in
each situation. The refugees in the boat are hopeful, looking for their freedom. While the soldiers
inside the border don’t seem willing to help. They are only concerned about their own interests.

Task 2 - Comprehension Activities:

Page 91:

1-

a. The refugees in the commercial are British people.

b. They came from London and they are going Africa.

c. Crowded trucks, unsafe boats and by foot.

d. Lack of safety in their country.

e. They were treated as if they were criminals and they were incarcerated.

2- The commercial is made in a way to make things as if they were the opposite. Instead of African
people going to Europe, instead of European going to Africa.

3- It made me feel bad about people in this situation. And it made me more sensible to what they
are dealing with. Because I put myself in their situation. And I’m sure this kind of content is very
effective to convince people that are against refugees for pure discrimination.
Task 3 - Grammar:

a. Although my father has been trying really hard. He still hasn’t learnt English weel
enough to find a job;
b. Emigrants leave their native countries in hope of a better future, however,
unfortunately that doesn’t always become a reality;
c. Some immigrants in Canada were able to obtain citizenship but most of them did
not;
d. Jaime’s early life in Canada wasn’t easy, though now he is a valuable member of the
Latino community in Ontario;
e. Canada has been a welcome country for many years, nevertheless, it still requires
immigrants to take several exams to acquire citizenship;
f. Obtaining a green card in the USA is extremely difficult nowadays, on the other
hand, you can always try to go to Canada instead.
