RESEARCH TITLE:
“IMPROVING RESEARCH SKILL: PROJECT TIKTALKER (TIKTOK AS TEACHING
AID FOR LEARNERS AND KNOWLEDGE ENHANCEMENT ON RESEARCH)”
SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH: Project TIKTALKER was

formulated of the proponent’s desire to help improve the academic performance of

the learners on Practical Research 1 through TikTok videos. These materials can be

used to remediate, enrich, and reinforce learning. Aligned with the most essential

learning competencies, Project TIKTALKER will provide different learning videos

based on MELC on social media specifically in TikTok.

The program implementor will test how essential using TikTok as learning aid

to the students who are always engage in the application.

This project will be done year-round as an aid for the Senior High School

Students with Practical Research 1 subjects. Project TIKTALKER will be used in

order to address learning gap and also improve the knowledge and interest of the

students in conducting research.

I. Introduction

Today, it can no longer disregard social media. Almost always, social media has

been utilized to announce, describe activities, check the schedules of the teacher have

created, etc. Most schools use social media to locate learning resources for teaching and

learning, where technology can help to improve learning processes. Although there is still a

gap between educators' aspirations for technology-enhanced interactive learning and the

realities of our daily work, most educators use it for their instruction. According to Prensky

(2002), social media use implies a learning process for students, teachers, and education

itself. Social media is connected to other online resources to support their education (Pitler,

Hubbell, & Malennoski, 2007).

In September 2016, TikTok, also known as Douyin in China, made its debut. The

following year, TikTok was launched worldwide. With more than 45 million downloads

globally during the three-month period, the application launched by Beijing-based digital

unicorn Bytedance has surpassed Facebook and WhatsApp as the most popular app

(Zheping, 2018). As the most downloaded application in July 2020, TikTok is one of the most

famous social networking sites which targeted youngsters to share their 3 to 60-second-long

videos. TikTok allows users to record videos of themselves goofing off to music or spoken-

word clips and then edit the footage with a variety of effects. As of 2021, TikTok is one of the

world's most popular applications (at least among those under a certain age).

It would be a waste not to use TikTok for educational purposes, given its growing

popularity as a social media platform. Although there is no extensive research on how

TikTok can facilitate learning specifically in listening skills, it cannot be denied that TikTok

could be an effective educational tool. Students should be given a variety of options from

which to pick the activity that best suits their interests and learning styles, as well as

increase the usage of autonomy-supportive behaviors, so that all students may participate in
the way that is most comfortable for them (Reeve et al., 2004). Therefore, with the

technological advancement and current students’ learning styles, it is important to study the

connection between social networking sites and interactive online learning in Research

courses, specifically in listening.

In May 2020, TikTok launched LearnOnTikTok program, which consists of

educational videos to facilitate learning during COVID-19 lockdowns (Hutchinson, 2020).

These videos are authored by professionals from different disciplines, students, and other

users, who have shared their knowledge to this social network's audiences (TikTok, 2021).

The videos linked to the hashtag #learnontiktok, have varied topics: from chemistry

experiments, cooking recipes, health tips, learning other languages, to creating origami

figures, all created by its users. Previous studies confirm that the use of video mini-lectures

improves participants' satisfaction (Hsin, 2013). Storytelling becomes vital to connect these

learning elements together, and videos provide a natural way to tell stories. Educational

video motivation is to engage and drive the learner to feel ownership of their own learning

and associate themselves with the course's stories (Guseva & Kauppinen, 2018).

As teachers tried to elevate the way of teaching and delivering the lesson, there are

lots of instruments that teachers can use. TikTok is one of them. The purpose of this

innovation is to venture the possibility of TikTok as enhancement or aid for teaching in

Practical Research 1. This innovation will benefit the Practical Research teachers since the

short videos will be a Most Essential Learning Compentency(MELC)-based. The short

videos are more direct to the point set-up that would discuss and help the students in

understanding and hitting the competency. In the previous innovation made, it is clear that

this is the first time that TikTok will be utilized in formal education system. And it is why,

project TIKTALKERes (Tiktok as Teaching Aid for Learners and Knowledge Enhancement

on Research) is essential innovation to enhance and help students understand more on

research and eventually learn research skill that would benefit them in the future.

II. Problem Statement

This research aims to identify the impact of project TIKTALKER(Tiktok as Teaching

Aid for Learners and Knowledge Enhancement on Research) in the subject Practical

Research 1.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of performance of the control group during pre-test?

2. What is the level of performance of the experimental group during pre-test?

3. What is the level of performance of the control group during post-test?

4. What is the level of performance of the experimental group during post-test?

5. Is there a significant difference between the result of control group and

experimental group?

The researcher wants to innovate the teaching-learning process with the help of

famous social media used by teenagers which is TikTok. The videos will surely address the

problems of the students in terms of having short attention span since the video compilation

averaged 1-3 minutes only.

III. Methods

The study will utilize quantitative research design specifically the experimental

design. According to Sirisilla(2023), experimental research design is a framework of

protocols and procedures created to conduct experimental research with a scientific

approach using two sets of variables. Herein, the first set of variables acts as a constant,

used to measure the differences of the second set.

The researcher will choose two groups during the research. The control group will be

the Caregiving-11 while the ABM-11 will serve as the experimental group. To start the data

gathering, the first thing to do is to conduct pre-test to control and experimental group about

Practical Research 1. After the pre-test, the treatment of the experimental group will then
proceed while the control group will not be given any chances on the treatment. Lastly, after

the series of discussion and exposure to the treatment of the experimental group which is

the project TIKTALKER(Tiktok as Teaching Aid for Learners and Knowledge Enhancement

on Research), both of the group will undergo post-test to finally get the level of performance

of the control and experimental group.

After obtaining the relevant data for the research, the researcher will compute for the

weighted mean of the pre-test and post-test of both groups in order to interpret the numerical

data. And then, the most appropriate statistical treatment of the situation will be the paired t-

test in order to identify the significant difference of the control and experimental group. With

this, the researcher will have sufficient data about the impact of project TIKTALKER(Tiktok

as Teaching Aid for Learners and Knowledge Enhancement on Research) in the teaching-

learning process.
