PROPERTIES AND UTILIZATION OF FOREST PRODUCTS
Introduction
As Agroforestry student, a need to familiarize on the multiple resources that could be derived
from the forest, the processes involved in the conversion of such resources in usable form
indispensable. It is expected that they will appreciate this survey of both major and minor forest
products.
Objectives
1. Articulate the significance of forest production to the national economy
2. Learn the process involve in the conversion of forest products into usable form
3. Know the value of protecting the forest cover of the country and its impact
4. Identify some forest plants with medicinal/ food value to man
Directions/Module Organizer
This Module contains 4 modules
Module 1 defines a forest product, distribution and functions of the forest and data on forest
production/ utilization and its contribution to the national economy
Module 2 consist of the physical properties of wood, wood seasoning, lumber manufacture,
measurements and grading.
Module 3 presents the different processes of converting log into veneer/plywood, particle
borad, fibreboard, pulp and paper and furniture manufacture
Module 4 shows the processing of non-timber forest products such as rattan and bamboo and
listing of miscellaneous non-timber forest products.

Activities such as (Quiz, Assignments, Exams) will be given on the module time Frame. If
there are any problems on any part of this module, the student may refer it to the faculty in charge or
message him through CP # 09169375093, fb Marsky Ubina, email: marskyubena12@yahoo.com.
Module 1

FOREST PRODUCT UTILIZATION

Mechanical properties of wood; statistical data on forest cover; production and utilization of
forest resources; processing of timber products and utilization of non-wood products.

PROPERTIES AND UTILIZATION OF FOREST PRODUCTS

FOREST PRODUCTS- Anything taken from the forest that are value to man-include timber,
pulpwood, firewood, bark, tree top, resin, gum, honey, beewax, nipa, rattan, oil or other forest growth
such as grass flowering plants, the associated water, fish, game scenic, historical, recreational and
geologic resources in forest lands.

Classification of FOREST Products

1. Minor Forest Products- These product are of secondary importance to man which
includes rattan, bamboo etc.
2. Principal Forest products- These products includes logs, timber- products that are of main
value to man.

Functions of Forest

1. Productive- because it is the source of resources for resource generation

2. Protective-because it controls soil erosion, control air temperature, excessive surface
runoff, etc.
3. Amenity/Aesthetic- the scenic beauty of a good forest come park rides (amusement parks)
in measurable function.
