Instrumental Music of Mindanao
THIRD QUARTER

Content Standard
Demonstrates understanding of the musical characteristics of representative music
from Mindanao

Performance Standard
Performs music of Mindanao with appropriate expression and style.

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
1. Describe the different musical instruments and characteristics of the Kulintang
Ensemble
2. Identify the different musical elements of the kulintang ensemble in relation to
their cultural and geographical influences.
3. Create an improvised kulintang instrument and perform it for the class.

II. CONTENT
A. Topic: Music 7 - Instrumental Music of Mindanao
Subtopic - Gong Music of Mindanao
B. Materials: Pictures, Videos, Laptop, Pens, and Activity Sheet

A. Preliminary Activities

4. Recall: Mindanao Songs (Pok pok Alimpako and No Te Vayas de Zamboanga)

B. Motivation: Jumble Words


Instruction: Students will arrange the jumbled letters to form the words related to the
topic.
1. KULINTANG - GANTLINKU
2. AGUNG - GUANG
3. GANDINGAN - DINGANAG
4. BABANDIR - RBAIBAND
5. DEBAKAN - EBADANK

C. LESSON PROPER

1. Activity: THINK, LOOK, AND LISTEN


Instruction: The teacher will show a video clip of Kulintang Ensemble performance and
students will think of a material that can be found in the classroom, in the house or in
surroundings that would sound like one of the Kulintang Ensemble instruments.

2. Analysis: ABOUT YOU KULINTANG


Instruction: The teacher will ask the student some question:
1. How many instruments have you heard in the video?
2. What is the most dominant instrument have you heard in video?
3. How did they play the instruments?

3. Abstraction: WATTA LIFE


Instruction: After watching the video, the teacher will ask the students one question.
1. What do you think is the importance of music and instruments in the life of people in
Mindanao as well as in our life?
4. Application: MY OWN VERSION OF KULINTANG
Instructions:
A. Students will create a group consisting of 5-7 members.
B. Students will create their own Kulintang using materials that can be found in their
houses and surroundings.
C. Each group will present their DIY Kulintang Ensemble
D. The students will be graded using the rubrics below

Creativity 10% - The design is unique and displays elements that are totally their own.
Craftsmanship 5% - The design is done with care, effort and neatness.
Collaboration 5% - All the members are cooperative and share the workload equally.

5. Assessment: SAY MY NAME


Instruction: The teacher will flash a picture on the screen and students will name the
instruments in their ¼ sheet of paper.

6. Assignment

Instruction: In a short bond paper Draw the Kulintang Instruments.
